Underwhelming campus experience

The people? I don’t think Bowdoin is known for a gorgeous campus

It's a world unesco site. And Poe's room is on display. And Montecello. And the vineyards around C'vile. And the beauty of the countryside. If you can't appreciate any of that then the problem is you so I can tell your kid didn't get in. Take your sour grapes elseshere.

World unesco site doesn’t make something pretty. Why you’re the only one defensive on this thread should really be called to question.

There’s an aggressively defensive Harvard grad here too.

I think Harvard grads generally don't feel compelled to defend, which I admire.

Duke: I know others love it, but the gothic vibe doesn’t jive with me.

Columbia and NYU: No campus feel.

Georgetown (law school only and in the 90’s): Yuck.

UC Hastings (now called something else): Also yuck.

PP upthread should take note.

as a whole Philly has its issues but University City (Penn Campus) and nearby Rittenshouse Sq. are nice and getting better.

Same! Hated it

U people are insane-the campus overlooks Lake Michigan and is beautiful all times of the year. Most of the architecture is Gothic looking and dorms are nice. Much better than the hood of U Chicago where there is abundant crime on the regular!

DP. Maybe this impression is because the tour only spends time on south campus, not north. My kid loved the tour and is so happy there, though like any school, that's more about the people and not the buildings. Same for UChicago - he didn't care for the AO who did the presentation (stuffy dude) or the tour guide. These two schools both have nerds of a different feather, perhaps.

If a campus doesn't please someone's personal aesthetic preferences, no one else really cares.

Obviously some people will treat a thread like this as an opportunity to express their personal animosities towards certain schools.

Anonymous wrote:Brown. It’s just not a nice campus. I had the opinion 30 years ago visiting a college friend. I had the same opinion touring with my kids. I do not like that campus.

I did not tour Brown but my kid did and came back and said the exact same thing. I was like HUH? (but happy to scratch off any big reach, so did not argue).

This thread proves that so much is about individual taste...and, unfortunately, the weather on the day of the tour.

Luckily my kid didn't seem to give a hoot about the look of a campus. In fact he liked schools that had no discernable campus like BU. So while I shared some of the opinions on this thread, I kept them to myself!

Yes it is. They designed some of the lead glass windows in the hope of replicating the Oxford / Cambridge look.

Right. I went there. Tell me exactly what was disappointing. Oh Yeah, you're the mom who complained about brown grass in Harvard Yard not realizing the protesters had slept on it for months.

DP. My kid wants to study math and we went to what I believe was the math department, and it seemed like a crummy afterthought. Very unimpressive. Other buildings were much nicer.

I’m laughing at the Yale comment. 😅

I toured Harvard in 2015 in the month of October. I found it dark and the grass crappy then. I was seriously underwhelmed.

We visited St. Johns, Annapolis over a Summer break. It was a little depressing in places, building up keep was not what it should be - moss growing on windows / brick work etc. It was a little shabby.

+1
I liked the BU campus as well, especially East Campus, BU Beach, and the area where the brownstone housing is located.
Nonetheless, all the happening places are right around the corner.
