See? What did I just say? Always try to find something negative to say.

It's not negative. It's positive. This day is about Notre Dame and the restoration. This day is not about Trump. Pope Francis had it right. Let the cathedral be the center of attention.

So why say that his presence could not ruin the day and mention his mortality. That's pretty negative to me. You could have just stopped at "Notre Dame it's quite beautiful. The restoration is impressive"

Because Trump wants all the attention on him. He doesn't give a damn about Notre Dame but he knows he will be the center of attention for much of the free world's press.

Could it be that the president of the United States is the leader of the free world? Shame that the President of the United States and the current leader of the free world could not be there.

You don’t think Biden figured out it was strategically more important for Trump to be there? They got Trump in the same room with Zalensky - that’s the entire point of Biden bowing out.

Biden took one for the team. And people want to crap on him over it. Unreal. I’m sure Macron was thankfully Biden bowed out; it gave Trump a moment to feel important and more amenable.

The event was flawless. Really great move by Macron et al.

This. The entire thing was a tactical effort to get Trump on side with Ukraine because no one -- not Biden, not Congressional leaders from both parties, and no one in Europe -- want Trump to pull our support from Ukraine. So the goal is to bring him into the fold and the way to do that with Trump is to make him feel very important and as though he is leading the way, without him actually leading the way.

I'm sure they back channeled it because they don't want there to be any concrete evidence that could embarrass Trump (invoking his rage) but yes it was obviously all arranged for Biden to stay back and send Jill so that Trump could take center stage, and them Macron could wine and dine Trump on the one hand while carefully arranging the Zelensky meeting with the other.

One thing about Trump as president is that it's good for other foreign leaders who want to play a bigger role in geopolitics. This is great for Macron who can play broker and savior in the EU at a time when he is pretty beleaguered in France. He's likely set to retire soon, but he wants to choose his successor and he wants to go out on top. Being Trump's handler in Europe with regards to Ukraine is an important role for him to play that will burnish his rep.

It’s also just really awkward for everyone to have to keep an eye on gentlemen who have a tendency to wander off. Best to stay at home.

I mean Trump also has a tendency to wander. But it's more important to keep an eye on him right now than Biden, who remains aligned with Europe on Ukraine and trade issues. People worry about Trump wandering literally and figuratively. That's why they seated him right up front where everyone could see him. The flattery and favors are intended to keep him from wandering into Putin's arms.

Dumb, bitter comment. Biden has a better grasp on foreign policy than most modern Presidents. He knew to strategically bow out.

Anonymous wrote:I find this funny. Trump IS a freak show. In the first term, he was generally regarded with disdain. Boorish. Crude. Stupid. Bad American. And so on. Europeans in particular felt completely free piling on Trump.

But I think now, world leaders respect this guy. One, he wasn't wrong about a lot of issues. And second, after suffering a loss that would usually send people into retirement, he came back. These are all politicians that understand the game. And the US is obviously the most powerful country on the planet. And it's a huge market. Every country wants good relations with the US.

There is no more disdain. They all understand Trump needs flattery and all that crap. It's like Louis XIV. Trump is the Sun King. And no one knows what he's going to do - but he's throwing out tariffs and national security issues that really impact a lot of countries. Really impactful things. But they all know being snide or disrespectful is going to cost their countries dearly. Trump is all about personal relationships. So all these presidents and prime ministers and even future kings are being very nice indeed.

Interesting moment in time.

No. He's a loose cannon and the world knows it. After going one round under his erratic lunacy they are getting out in front of it this time. Stroke the ego, pretend he's the very best, fluff and flatter, and suck it up for four more years.

It’s hilarious that Trump fans expect him to be given respect. Him and his followers are the ones that took everything past the s-bend. His election shows us that decorum, honor and civility are obsolete and counterproductive. It really is shameful and an embarrassment that he was at the opening.
