I picked this bio of George Santos up from our local library last weekend, mostly because I've been trying to understand this whole "Grifter culture." I work at a university and from time to time I encounter these guys, nearly always guys, graduate students, who appear to have no visible means of support. Some of them can hang around for years, and they go to Washington and meet with people, attend various sorts of "conferences," and then they get married and buy houses and have families, again, with no actual jobs that are apparent to anyone else. Some of them travel abroad a lot. I've always just assumed they were all from wealthy families. There was one who told everyone that he was an author and that he had been on CNN, etc. None of it was true.
In any case, in this bio of Santos, the author kind of says "someone who is a grifter will basically do anything he can get away with, and will persist until he is called out on his BS. These people sometimes believe their own lies and they just have a lot more nerve than most people -- which explains why they can lie to your face and double down on a lie." Anyway, here's the link to the Santos bio if you're interested: https://www.advocate.com/books/the-fabulist-george-santos-biography#toggle-gdpr |
