To those born and/or living on the coasts, do you perceive Chicago to be "unsophisticated"?

Born and raised in NY, but started my career in Chicago and lived there for more than a decade. I’ll take Chicago over NYC any day of the week. Anyone who thinks Chicago is unsophisticated is simply ignorant. World class museums, a stunning lakefront, beautiful parks, a food scene to die for…I could go on and on. And I’ll take Chicago’s theater scene over NYC’s overhyped Broadway nonsense. The city that brought you Shrek and Spiderman musicals has no business calling others “unsophisticated.”

Pretty good for what one ignorant PP describes as a hick town.

the thing about chicago is it's not near anywhere else most people would ever want to go. NYC/ Boston/ DC are near each other and new england, plus closer to europe. Cali has the whole 'west' scene. where do you go for a road trip from chicago? wisconsin? indiana? It feels sort of isolated from other good options. which is a different but unrelated issue from being unsophisticated.

Sorry coasties, but what city on the East Coast other than NYC compares to Chicago on sophistication and cultural offerings? DC? Boston? Philly? No, no, and no. But nice try getting a bash post in on the Midwest. You seem to only give us respect when you want to send your kids to our state schools because most of your state schools suck so much.

Oh, go pound sand. Chicago is close to Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. And have you ever actually taken a road trip to the beautiful lakes of Wisconsin. You may be too provincial and ignorant, but thousands of other people (many from Chicago) take these trips every summer. Door County, WI is more beautiful than anything near DC.

Oh, wow, the East Coast is two hours “closer to Europe” by plane. Game, set, and match you.

Yes. It's in the midwest. It's land locked. I would never be able to live there.

You must have missed the 23,000 square mile lake it sits on. Wow, I can’t believe how stupid some on these comments are.

And even more East Coasters trying to convince themselves that they are worldly because they live in an overrated sh!tshack in Arlington and push paper for a living.

Hey, hate all you want. I spent 10 years in DC before moving to the Midwest, and I would take the Midwestern lifestyle any day. Better restaurants, better housing stock, nicer people, better access to nature, a lot more to do. And Lake Michigan >>>>Potomac River.

And what great body of water do you live near in the DC area? The Potomac River?

“closer to europe” has to be one of the dumber things i’ve read on DCUM and that is saying something. the flight time from JFK to Paris is about 7 and a half hours. O’Hare to Paris is 8 hours. Those 30 minutes must be quite meaningful to you

Well, the whole comment is dripping with ignorance, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

+1. Besides WI, the Indiana dunes and Michigan beach towns are prettier than anything within similar distance from DC.
