the thing about chicago is it's not near anywhere else most people would ever want to go. NYC/ Boston/ DC are near each other and new england, plus closer to europe. Cali has the whole 'west' scene. where do you go for a road trip from chicago? wisconsin? indiana? It feels sort of isolated from other good options. which is a different but unrelated issue from being unsophisticated.
Oh, go pound sand. Chicago is close to Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. And have you ever actually taken a road trip to the beautiful lakes of Wisconsin. You may be too provincial and ignorant, but thousands of other people (many from Chicago) take these trips every summer. Door County, WI is more beautiful than anything near DC.
+1. Besides WI, the Indiana dunes and Michigan beach towns are prettier than anything within similar distance from DC.
