If you’re having those doubts I’d start at Math 6. They move some kids up to pre-algebra after the school year starts if it’s appropriate. If you knew all the material was covered and he was getting 100 on every test it would make sense to fight for Pre-algebra |
fight for your kid. My kid had a terrible SOL year in 5th grade. barely passed. I knew it was the teacher. We did a whole summer of 2xs a week tutoring. i bullied my way into 6/7 math in 6th grade despite a chorus of protests from the school. e did great. in 7th grade he took Algwbra 1, summer took geometry, in 8th he took another combo class which was Algebra 2/Tig. By 10th he was in BC calc, by 12th he was taking linear algebra at George Mason.
he’s now at Georgia Tech and is taken g math classes i don’t even understand. This is a kid who nearly failed 5th grade math SOLs and everyone at the school and admin building rolled their eyes at as i demanded he advance. I got the last eye roll. We know our kids best. |
You didn’t just demand you didn’t intensive tutoring to supplement |
This was in APS? |
Why would anyone do this? This kid probably slowed everyone else down who were truly gifted in Math. And then the complaints about APS's math program starts over again. |
Somewhat related, when do kids learn to take notes in math class? My child when in Math 6 practiced entirely on the iPad using apps like IXL. When do they start to jot down notes: definitions, learning material, practice problems? I am at a loss here and do not know how to direct my child at home. DS dives into work with no notes to reference and thus gets frustrated. Videos from different online sources are inconsistent and scattered. |
My kids started taking detailed notes during 7th grade algebra |
My kid took notes in prealgebra in 7th. If they didn’t do it themselves there were notes to reference. |
