Riding senior CS major with internship lined up since end of October last year. This will be his 3rd internship in college.
At his school, most kids in the STEM majors begin their search process in August. With most offered landing in October/Nov. Bt December almost all of his close friends have landed somewhere. A lot of the companies even send out Xmas gift packages during the holiday season. My son will begin his full time job search in the summer, prepping for interviews, practicing code tests and getting his resume updated. The resume drops will probably begin mid to end of August. |
+1. If no formal internship then get a job plus do some unpaid work in the area of major that will build the resume and help land an internship for next summer. Take a class, get excel certified, practice a language, write an article, help out at a nonprofit etc. |
Is this Summer’s internship not one that naturally leads to a FT offer? |
Typically yes. But last summer some companies didn’t give out return FT offers. One of his friends who was a junior last summer (from a different school) received a return internship offer but not a FT offer. DS wants to make sure he has options in the event the market turns south. Never hurts to be prepared. |
This is fine pay. She’s a college student. Obviously a PR internship is going to pay the same as other industries and that’s okay. When she converts to full time, I would expect her salary to be at least $70k to $80k a year. |
| My current junior finance major kid has an internship lined up for this summer here in the DMV. Pay is $25/hour with flexible WFH/in office for the summer. Hoping it will lead to a FT offer. |
It’s looking like a combination of a part time internship (200 hours) which the school is funding + a job as a camp counselor. I don’t think this is an awful outcome. He will continue to search for a full time internship between now and the end of May and see if anything comes to fruition. Regardless, happy he is getting some internship experience this summer. |
Current Freshman at HYPSM secured an 8 week ($20/hr) summer internship as a data analyst. Applied in January and received response in April. DC extremely thankful to have this opportunity. Many friends at school have yet to find an internship but are still looking.

| For those saying students have to start applying in the fall -- that is not necessarily true. I do hear of kids in engineering and computer science starting to look in the fall, but in other areas, e.g., public policy, the process is in the spring. The internships my DC was applying for had application deadlines in mid-March (and he was successful, fwiw). |
| Have any students been unable to secure a summer internship? If so, what are next steps? |
This is true, in the fall best places we’re looking for spring interns. Both my kids got offers in march. |
| My rising Junior did bc he is a nepo baby. Lots of his friends got them through connections not mass applying. I think it is harder that way for juniors vs seniors. |
| My rising junior didn't apply for any. I'm sure it will be fine. |
| My rising sophomore already applied for next summer. He applied for his current internship last summer. So yeah, one year ahead of time. |
