They’re increasing the number of half days next year.

The schedule Halloween week next year is especially stupid. I've been considering just pulling my kids that week as APS has come up with a schedule that makes that week a big waste. It just so stupid. They could move the half day and give everyone a longer weekend, but since when did they use common sense in making a calendar?

Right now it's:
Wednesday= half day for training
Thursday= Halloween
Friday= no school

Why on earth isn't the half day on Thursday??

I remember reading somewhere that early releases are intentionally scheduled for mid-week, because if they have them on Fridays, lots of people will just take a long weekend. If that’s true, they are TRYING to make the schedule less convenient for families.

It's a religious holiday so no. APS doesn't control when Eid al-Fitr is. No one has an issue when Christmas falls in the middle of the week and we build spring break around easter every single year, I don't think it is THAT much of a burden to have ONE day off a year so that students of another major religion get some protected time with their families where they aren't missing content etc. for one major holiday. I am Christian, for the record. Yes it is annoying how it falls with the grading period, it has felt like a lot lately. But I don't think the general premise is flawed.

Except, this is a Christian country. There's hardly anyone in this country who celebrates Eid.

BULLCRAP. It’s a secular country.

You might want to look at the slogan on our currency… and the fact that Christmas is a federal holiday…

What if the Christian god is the same as the Muslim god?

I’m Muslim. Eid isn’t unpredictable. The Fiqh Council for North America has the Eid dates set for the next 20 years or so. It’s not like it’s unpredictable. APS could have easily moved the grading day with the Eid holiday. Or at the very least moved other holidays around. Also Fairfax county consolidates religious holidays with teacher work days. If a teacher has a religious holiday that day they can just take the day off.

OMG, this thread has gone bonkers. I’ll never remind anyone of the day off again.

Yes, we're taking that long week off as well. They've created perverse incentives to skip school.

And on top of it Nov. 5 is a day off due to elections. Easily a week long vacation right there
