SUNY (Bing or Stonybrook)

Agree with a previous poster, this is false.

I follow my local newspaper from my NY hometown, and when they name the top 15 from each year's HS class, there are always one or two who are enrolling at Stony Brook (including the valedictorian from a few years ago). Binghamton appears hardly ever.

I agree. We are very seriously considering SUNY Purchase College as an OOS option for our artsy liberal arts student. SUNY schools have a lot to offer and are a great deal financially.

If interested in Purchase, maybe check out Geneseo as well!

They're not really interchangeable. Purchase is great for arts. So many famous alumni. Stony Brook is science. Bing is most selective. ESF for environmental. Geneseo and Buffalo also great, but different vibe. It's a unique construct for a system

+1. That's the biggest difference between the SUNY system and most other state university systems. They don't have a "flagship" but lots of smaller, focused schools.
I grew up in NY, had lots of friends go to Binghamton, and my brother attended Geneseo.

That's true, they actually have two: Buffalo and Stony Brook. Not that it's that important.

This is kind of weird, though ... they sort of retrofitted the idea of a "flagship," as opposed to PA, NJ, VA, MD, etc., which have true flagships.

Like I said before, it's kind of an honorary designation that really doesn't carry any weight save for bragging rights.

Yes, totally agree with this.
