SUNY (Bing or Stonybrook)

Anonymous
As a NYer, I'm wondering if people can give me insight into reputation (outside the NY area) of the better SUNY schools.

Are these known at all? Or just known regionally?

Just regionally.
But - there are enough NYers in most places.

UMD is to this area as SUNY is to NY.

Regional, but .. very well respected in region. And if you had to pick a region, NY is not a bad region.

Not completely true. SUNY Binghamton is probably the top of the SUNY system -- which is good overall. Employers KNOW those kids are smart.

Stony Brook is not as well known but also has a very good reputation. I would think the whole Northeast corridor would know and respect these schools.

Stony Brook is tops for science in the SUNY system. Lots of doctors and research PhDs come out of Stony Brook.

Agree. Back in my day similar cohorts ended up at Binghamton as they did Cornell. The ones at Cornell could afford the tuition. Binghamton got the smart kids who couldn’t.

What about Buffalo?

uh no. UMD is nationally recognized. Towson is regional and would be seen that way.

just as NYers think that SUNY is nationally recognized, so do DMVers think UMD is nationally recognized. They're nationally recognized .. by some. But they're no UVA, no MI, no UCLA or Cal, no UT Austin, no UGA, not even a WI or Iowa or Indiana or Ohio. Don't ask me why. Not a knock on quality. It's about sports probably.

Yep. More Stuy/Tech/Bronx Sci kids at Bing than any other school. But I'm from NY so I don't know national rep tbh.

Stonybrook has grown in science and Wall Street over the last 25 years.

But for a general student - with Stoneybrook on the LinkedIn Profile -outside of NY - no one (except those who grew up in NY) will know

University Buffalo is a highly ranked university also. Well known for engineering. Bing, Stony Brook and Buffalo are very good and respected schools. There are also many smaller SUNY campuses throughout the state known for various majors…education, art, music etc.

? If UGA is nationally recognized so is UMD. UMD is higher ranked than UGA.

UMD is B1G.

You clearly just hate UMD.

Dp, but that’s an absurd conclusion.

I don't! I'm just a NYer stuck on DCUM (RIP YBM) and I've learned in the last few months that UMD is a good school. As a person who has lived and worked for giant tech companies in NY for 30 years, I didn't know that before. Sorry. Still think it's about sports!
