Also, UMD has a prettier campus. College Park has improved immensely, and it’s right outside DC.

That tiki torch thing was awful.

This has to be a troll post. Almost every ranking of best looking college campuses has UVA included. I have never seen UMD mentioned.

UMDCP has much higher rankings for majors like CS or engineering, math, physics or economics, pretty much anything useful. I went to UVA. It's a fine school but mostly for things like Art History or Fench Lit.

I’m a grad of UMDCP and now live in Va. I’d be happy if my kid got into either school!

This is the correct answer. And in state tuition monetizes the preference for either. If in MD, go to UMDCP; if in VA, go to UVA. Not worth the additional $ to go OOS to the other school, no matter what the perceived pros or cons are.

If in this hypothetical, DC is truly blessed to have this choice between the two schools, but is OOS, then DC most likely has a shot at Ivy/T20 which would be preferable to both schools, all things being equal.

Finally, of course, buried in this discussion is the real choice between the MD publics and the VA publics. Despite all of the NOVA/Richmond folks complaining about lack of access to UVA/VT/W&M, give me the VA system any day over the MD system.

UMD is closer to the big hospitals, NIH, VA hospital, and the like, so more research opportunities year round for premed students.

My daughter got into both UVA and UMD. We live in VA. She chose UMD for the diversity. She is black (I'm white). Cost did not matter to us. She loves it!

Same. My daughter isn't black, but she has a diverse extended family of blacks, latinos, asians, and white cousins. She chose UMD over UVA. Honestly, it hurts my heart when I hear some of the unkind things said of UMD because I feel like some of its rooted in something more deeper that people are not consciously aware of.

all others UVA

But you knew that.

UMD CS, Econ, Math, Criminology, Engineering, Physics
UVA: humanities like French Lit or Poly Sci

UVA has a small edge for business but they seem fairly comparable overall

Geez. Political Science is a Social Science. It is not part of humanities. You can't even get your "damn with faint praise" statements right.

CS is the most popular major at UMD. According to https://csrankings.org UMDCP is #11 and UVA is #35.

UVA CS grads get higher salaries than UMD according to College Scorecard and WSJ earnings reports.

Both schools
Offer a ton. All majors. Do your research and decide. I’d have a hard time paying almost 80k for uva out of state. And my child goes there and is thriving. So I’m not a uva hater. Gl.

Surprised by an actually astute comment. The problem with UVA oos is that it is a private school tuition; not only do most oos students prefer T20 unis, but the T15 SLACs will also be at play for this caliber student. UVA is in that sense a backup, which is why oos yield is so low. It is also why UMD in-state is preferable to UVA oos.
