Also, UMD has a prettier campus. College Park has improved immensely, and it’s right outside DC.

This has to be a troll post. Almost every ranking of best looking college campuses has UVA included. I have never seen UMD mentioned.

UMDCP has much higher rankings for majors like CS or engineering, math, physics or economics, pretty much anything useful. I went to UVA. It's a fine school but mostly for things like Art History or Fench Lit.

I hate MD. Grew up in VA. We have so many more options for all types and majors and school sizes.

I'd pick UVA, WM, VT and JMU over UMD.

^ My kid didn't even apply to UMD. Zero interest.

Got into UVA and WM and now waiting to hear back from some top 10, 20 schools.

My kid had zero interest in VA schools. Too southern aka racist.

I never got that sense when I went there, but it did have a predominate greek/frat boy culture.

Yet you stay on a DMV focused website to bash colleges in the DMV area? That’s odd and petty AF. Time to get a life on the West coast, don’t you think?

eh it's fine. I'm originally from Ca (live in DC area now), and most Californians think of VA as too south, and MD as a dinky state. However, if they are in tech, they will know UMD since a really famous tech entrepreneur graduated from there.

UVA wasn't even on my high stats DC radar since DC is a CS major.

CA universities are great, but you have to pay for the col and high taxes. It's why we and many others moved out of there.

Not a fan of that ranking. It's all about how many articles have been published.

FWIW, DC is at UMD studying CS.

I know! That ranking measures research output so is purely academic, whereas ones likeUSNews include diversity and %PEL grants. USNews has MD at #17 and VA at 24 or 25.

This is so true. Most of the country sees UVA as just another southern school. When they think of think of the great publics; Berkeley, UCLA, and Michigan cone to mind before UVA.

I'm sure you were being sarcastic, but the research output of professors doesn't necessarily equate to a great program.

Again, my DC is at UMD for CS.

ancient history. All from out of state. All put in prison by Charlottesville residents. try again

a few years ago is not "ancient".

People outside this area do see VA as too southern. They don't care if you are from NoVa or RoVa. Having lived here now for 10 years, I see that MoCo is no different to FFX, however, coming from CA, I did initially see VA as too southern. It's a mental block.

Charlottesville is a very liberal city. The last election, 85.5% voted democrat.

I’m a grad of UMDCP and now live in Va. I’d be happy if my kid got into either school!
