Whose ES Still Celebrate Valentine's Day?

Anonymous
My kid had a kindness day at school but they were still exchanging Valentine's Day cards. It basically seemed like a difference without distinction.

Do you still buy cheesy valentine's day cards for your kid to give each classmate?

My school does a party, yes, with the focus being on the card exchange - which is what your class is doing too! I wouldn’t call that not a party.

of course, if that's what the kid wants. This year my 2nd grader found some inexpensive backpack keychains from Oriental Trading, so we ordered those and she made tags. Fifth grader specifically asked to give out Fun Dip valentines.

Our ES up in a Derwood does a valentines party in the afternoon with card exchange, treats, crafts and games.

They blow up a few balloons and do some crafts as then it's back to work on a Valentine word search and a color-by-number like an ordinary day.

Halloween and Valentine’s Day are completely banned at my kid’s elementary school in Rockville. We received explicit emails banning the exchanging of valentines and stating that there would be no parties. Same happened for Halloween, too. It’s sad, especially since the Halloween parade was adorable and one time the parents all got to socialize.

Why? How about love and kindness themed activities?

That is awful.... What school is this? I'm surprised the parents don't complain about this!

I meant this to be under a different post.

OP here-our teacher sent out a note and said no party but they can bring cards to exchange. That’s it.

So they can exchange valentines? That seems like celebrating Valentine's Day to me.

Exactly. Hope kids enjoy the day with their peers. Soon they won't have these exchanges in upper grades, sadly.

Middle and High schools don't do anything to celebrate in school?

Nope, I can see it in HS, but MS needs to let kids be kids.

Bayard Rustin elementary in Rockville does Valentines/Friendship parties, but it's left up to the individual teacher and room parents as to what that party entails. The only requirement is all food must be store bought.

There's also a Halloween Party & Parade in the Fall too, though with an optional Fall Festival in the media center that parents can opt into instead.

We're also the #1 most diverse elementary school in the entire state according to niche.com

So while it may be easy to blame MCPS itself, or 'leftists' or 'PC culture' or one particular ethnic/religious group, there's nothing blanket going on here. It's very much down to how your school's administration is either deciding for themselves or responding to your particular school's parent population.

Stop answering with school names. Centralnoffice is monitoring this board to kill what joy and American culture is left in school.

Is that one well attended?

Not sure. The media center is sufficient space to hold it, and fewer than five students in the classes I've volunteered in have opted for the alternative celebration.

Ours does and they still have a party, with treats, snacks and cards to hand out. Same for Halloween.

Rosemary Hills celebrates Valentine’s Day but not Halloween.
