What's with the eyeroll? |
No your principal caved in to the loud parents' push to eliminate party and parade. When there were class parties, in some schools up to hundreds of students would opt out from the celebrations (for religious and other reasons). Instead these students would stay in the gym or different area of the school while their peers partied. |
Ours had DADS, fabulous with the class activity! |
Balloons? Food? Music? Games? Crafts? Sounds like a party. |
No thank goodness |
eye roll? An eyeroll because I think kids should be kids? |
The irony in the push back on Valentine's Day in schools is not about its religious origins but rather its transformation into a secular holiday that focuses on narrow definitions of love. If people actually took a moment to realize that St. Valentine was someone who ministered to a persucated religious minority, the world might be a better place. |
| Celebrate LOVE. Call it love week. Love comes in various forms. I LOVE pizza. |

Our HS has singing valentines and we were rickrolled over the PA system. |
Can't lie here--I'm a kindergarten teacher and I friggin love Valentine's Day at school with kids. It's a day to celebrate love and kindness and all the things and people we love. We spend about a week before the day talking it up, and it's always impressive to me how much the students buy in and want to show their classmates how much they love them. It's really sweet, and while we always have an ice cream party in the afternoon, the kids are actually more excited to give out their Valentines and goody bags than to eat the party snacks. This year was no exception. Kids rolled up with their shopping bags full of Dollar Tree goodies to hand out, dressed in their fancy pink and red clothes, and left at dismissal declaring it the best day ever. It's okay to let go and just allow children to have their childlike wonder and fun. |
Loiderman had a Valentine’s Day dance. Does that count? |
Halloween and Valentine’s Day are completely banned at my kid’s elementary school in Rockville. We received explicit emails banning the exchanging of valentines and stating that there would be no parties. Same happened for Halloween, too. It’s sad, especially since the Halloween parade was adorable and one time the parents all got to socialize. |

Woodlin ES, the afternoon parties start at 2 pm, parents volunteer, nut free/gluten free cupcakes, candy, card exchange, etc.
Personally, it's too much. There are too many "holidays" in school these days. These things should be celebrated at home. |
