Do you consider Lisa to be a "Jewish name?"

Anonymous
Lisa Kudrow is Jewish and I don't know her but three other Lisa's I know are not Jewish.

OP—I hope you’ve learned a very valuable lesson:

DO NOT SHARE POSSIBLE NAMES WITH ANYONE. I’m serious. Everyone feels they can let it rip and disparage whatever you might find to be a nice name. The closer the person is to you, the more they will crap on your name choices.

Wait until you deliver. Keep it a surprise/secret. Yes there are some rude people, but 95% of people will say nothing when you present a live baby named Pierpont Mergatroid.

OP here. I don’t think she was disparaging my chosen name, unless you think it’s an insult to say a name is Jewish. Which I don’t.

Here’s a great list and page to follow for inspiration:

Of course I do not think it’s an insult to say a name sounds Jewish. But why open yourself up to comments and nitpicking? Perhaps I should amend my post to say that you should keep the name a surprise until birth because you don’t really need to hear everyone’s commentary about your name choices.

Nope. All the Lisa’s I’ve know have been non-Jewish. Most are Gen-X.

Does your friend think that Marge, Homer, Bart and Maggie are Jewish names as well?

t, I'd be surprised to hear this opinion. But even in usage, I don't think I know any Jewish Lisas.

Who was JEWISH! Every Lisa I know is Jewish. "One of the most common meanings of the name Lisa is "God is my oath." This meaning comes from the Hebrew name Elisheba, which was the name of Aaron's wife in the Old Testament. Elisheba was later abbreviated to Elizabeth, and Lisa is a diminutive form of Elizabeth."

I don’t know any Jewish Lisa.

I know a Jewish Liza . Liza sounds more Jewish than Lisa probably because Liza is short for Eliza or Elizabeth

Is Diane /Diana or Allison Jewish?

I’ve known more Jewish Diane’s and Allison’s in my life but they are English /Scottish names

This just means you know a lot of Jewish people.

I think it's fairly neutral. Like Sarah. Tons of Jewish and non-Jewish Sarahs (though maybe the non-Jewish ones are more likely to spell it Sara?). It's not a name that is almost certainly Jewish like Hadassah or Adina or Miriam.

FWIW, I am Jewish and have a sister named Lisa (who is under 40, for those saying it's an old lady name), and most of the Lisas I have known have been Jewish. But as another poster pointed out, that's probably because I know a lot of Jews! Many posters have said they know non-Jewish Lisas.

If you like the name, go for it.

Huh. I think Sara is the more Jewish spelling.
