What kind of grades do Blair magnet kids get?

Anonymous
The harsh reality of the program is that you actually have to earn those grades. When DD started I was really in awe at the amount of work she and her classmates were putting in and how intelligent they all are. To do well in the magnet you have to have both as well as excellent time management skills.

They were strongly advised against taking APUSH but some ignored that advice.

I wonder if they regret it.

I’ve heard so.

Some can handle it, some can't. I wonder how students in both Functions and APUSH are faring. How many of them are there?

HW load
* for magnet 2-3 hours / night
* for APUSH 1-2 hours / night
* for Functions 3-4 hours /night

With those choices expect 6-8 hours of HW / night.

This is very inaccurate according to many students. Magnet classes have minimal HW and APUSH has an hour or so of homework every two classes. Functions HW varies between 1 hour and several hours.

True for my kid too. On average 2-3 hr/day homework time in total.

My kid isn’t in functions and isn’t in APUSH and has 2 hours or so every night. Sometimes a little more, sometimes less.

I’m op that you reply to. For your information, my kid is taking function and apush, and spent 2-3 hrs/day on home work. More hours during weekends, like 4-5 hrs Sat and Sun.

That's impressive. Most spend that much just on functions.

As compared to..... mcps's policies generally lead to inflation.

I would say grades at Blair are less inflated than mcps overall.

The magnet is an exception to the MCPS grade inflation problem. It's not easy to get As.

Magnet kids are benefiting from the 50% rule?

A previous poster even claimed these kids work an hour or more every night!

How does it change year-to-year? Is Freshman year homework pretty typical or does it get worse (or better)?

Every time this comes up people forget to say whether these timings are every night or only on half nights for block schedule.

And for Functions there's a big difference depending on whether the student already took Alg 2 in middle school.

Every other class usually - block schedule.
Taking Algebra 2 in MS, either in or out of school helps a lot with Functions.

The 50% rule is ruining the magnets!

I heard a magnet kids used the 50% rule and their elite math skills to game their grades! The sky is falling! What shall we do?

It depends. Typical non-functions magnet kid has 2-3 hours of homework a night. APUSH will add another 2 hours. If your kid gets home from the activity bus at 5 p.m. and takes a short break and dinner, they will be doing homework until 11 each night and have to be up around 6 a.m. the next day. This is seven or fewer hours of sleep a night, which is unhealthy for a teen and leaves little downtime.

Parent of kid who went to Blair. My kid definitely got too little sleep.

I think the workload really depends on how smart the student is versus how much of a high achiever they are. DC only does an hour of homework AT MOST on weeknights and goes to bed around 10:15. DC does do an hour or two of homework on Saturdays and Sundays. They have a 3.9 GPA. It's not a terribly hard/work-intensive program for students with a very high IQ and also don't take a ton of other AP classes in addition to the magnet courses.

I hate to say it in response to your sanctimonious post that your kid is so much superior to others because they don’t take as long over their homework, but your kid isn’t the high achiever that you think they are within the magnet if they have a 3.9. That puts them in the bottom half.
