Tell me about your tattoo . . .

Oh! 16:09, you're THAT poster! The one who bashes the worried mom asking a legitimate question because she had a typo in her posting. Why didn't you say so?? If I'd known it was you...

I want to ask though: Doesn't it hurt to get a tattoo? I can't imagine the pain. I also would see it as a desecration of my body, but I don't judge other people's bodies. I do feel a bit freaked when I see full-on sleeves. And I feel sorry for Bob Harper. Every time he has to look presentable, he's wearing a long-sleeved shirt buttoned up to his neck. And then, of course, he has to throw on a tie with it. He couldn't be happy about that.

Re: the pain, it depends on a lot of things: where the tattoo is located, where you are in your monthly cycle, your own tolerance, etc. I was prepared for the pain to be a lot worse than it actually was. It was kind of like a papercut, except not nearly as awful because I was expecting it and my body made some endorphins after a while.

Did you cut yourself or take hard drugs as a teenager? I am asking this, seriously. Because paper cut pain really would hurt me. There could be some correlation between the attraction to the pain. Doesn't it take hours to do the big ones?

This poster is not the one who innocently asked if it was painful. This poster is not nice.

No, really, I'm not--if you follow the whole thread...jeebus, never mind.

But most work spaces are not "conservative" anymore and those that are are generally trending toward being more liberal, at least in terms of attire and presentation. You think they're trashy... great, good for you. But most people don't share that. So if your argument against them is practical, that it's going to keep folks from getting jobs... you're just wrong.

If you want to conclude that everyone that has one, by virtue of having it, is somehow lower down the social totem pole and likely came from some sort of troubled, Skittle-filled background, you are a bigot.

If you don't want one, fine. Don't get one. No one is criticizing that decision for you. I don't have one, but have no issue with those that do. Wouldn't we rather promote freedom of expression? I realize you're not saying that they should be banned, but by advocating for stigmatizing consequences that are essentially arbitrary, you are tacitly advocating for restrictions on express. You think it is right that those who choose to express themselves in this way should be treated as lesser citizens, at least privately. What BS.

That's not to say there aren't people with stupid tattoos. But there are people with bad plastic surgery, ugly clothing that costs how many thousands of dollars, wear garish jewelry... should we denounce those things entirely?

Are people going to make judgment and potentially act on those judgments based on appearance and presentation? Yes. Are those of those judgments predicated upon arbitrary value systems or stereotypes? Yes. Is that right? No. Yet you seem to advocate and promote such a world view. Way to be.

I'll respond to this--I never said that all tattoos were bad. I said visible ones look trashy. I think we all make value judgements and presentation does matter. It isn't everything---but the tattoos are incredibly ugly and permanently disfiguring. That cute clear line drawing on a 20 year old will be a blurry, smudgy, wrinkly, WEIRD thing when you're 40.

PP. Why don't you have one? Clearly you think there are "stupid tattoos" I don't think it's a stretch to say you think that stupid people get stupid tattoos. So you've made a value judgement right there. Taste IS arbitrary. The good thing about bad jewelry or clothing is that you can take it off if your lucky enough to grow up and acquire better taste (if that's what you care about, I don't). But I hate the trend for trivializing tattoos because it's just a permanent bumper sticker on your body. Ridiculous.

Way to be. Get over yourself. You're not being honest about your hatred of bad jewelry and ugly, expensive clothing.

I don't have a tattoo because there is nothing I am interested in putting on my body permanently. Just a personal choice. Not my thing. But no issue whatsoever with those who opt to.

I do think that there are stupid tattoos. I think there are ugly ones. Some say more about a person than others (i.e., a swastika vs a butterfly). But the mere having a tattoo is never stupid, or trashy, or anything else. It's one more way that people choose to express themselves. Our society/culture has arbitrarily placed certain values/stigmas on that which, luckily, are being moved away from. You, for whatever reason, want to hold on to this antiquated line of thinking.

Explain WHY it is trashy? If you think it is so, you must have a reason, right? If not, then you are simply regurgitating arbitrary social norms you have accepted subconsciously. Your opinion is without thought or questioning. Weak.

Indeed. The tatooed people do like their graffitti. And calling people names. And assuming others don't understand how their complicated pyramid, slush fund, I mean not-for-profit scams, I mean, organizations.

How many of you tatted women are under 40? How many live in the far burbs? How many of you grew up eating mayo and skittles on white bread in a trailer?

Oh and guys with prison tats should always be held up as the shining example of why a giant gnarly tattoo is finally an acceptable thing in the conservative workplace.

You know who else liked to put tattoos on people before he put them in ovens?

Not for nothing, it is the preferred form of self expression of white supremacists. Although I now see confused darker skinned AA carving themselves up with them. Esp. in the NBA. Can barely see the markings really... It looks particularly silly in that case. AA's have enough prejudice to overcome without scribbling permanent graffiti on themselves.

And yes. Graffiti is "artwork". It does have it's place. I don't like to see it on the mailbox in my neighborhood--but that's another issue, really.

I hate the trend toward doing this because it is permanent branding for fashion or kicks--not a discreet homage to a truly meaningful experience; no disrespect Mr or Ms USMC.

Go to the beach looking like carny folk if you like, no one's stopping you.

The carnies are more fun! Are you a woman? I asked this earlier but got no response...don't know if you are the same poster or not...but how do you feel about plastic surgery? I am a tattooed Jew and find it absolutely hilarious when woman with fake breasts and taught faces look down upon me for a tattoo. The like to inject botulism into their faces to make it temporarily smooth. Some like to have the skin cut on their faces and pulled up higher so they can look like alien clones of one another as well.

I mean really. I think plastic surgery is ridiculous...but if someone wants to get it, and it makes them happy or they like it, more power to them! It's their body and not mine. Actually, the tattooed people look normal these days compared to some plastic surgery victims. Have you seen the Catwoman? In my opinion, that is MUCH more shocking!

I am not the only poster here who prefers not to see random people's tatoos. But I am woman. But if really are Jewish (I think that part of your post sounds fake, but , whatever) and a woman too, then you must not be a practicing Jew because it is considered an abomination. Why is would be relevant that you are Jewish. Ants then to refer to "the Catwoman" as though she were a real person. Do you mean the actresses Eartha Kitt or Julie Newmar.

Tattoo people know those things are pretend, right?

I am not talking Batman. I am speaking of the woman that the media dubbed the Catwoman. I am a Jew. If you know the upper crust Jewish families in the Washington area, then I am quite sure you would be shocked at who my family is. Interestingly, I know quite a few Jews in that echelon of society who also have tattoos. I added the fact that I am Jewish because when I go to events, it is rare not to see fake breasts, lifted faces and sculpted bodies that were created by suction and maintained by a trainer. If you read, I also said I think it is quite sad that the same women look down on people for having tattoos. They have "desecrated" their bodies as well. However, I do not judge them. I have friends with enhancements and if that is what they need to feel better about themselves, then so be it.

You are correct I don't practice. For me organized religion is a bunch of BS. I am Jewish by how I was raised. I was taught to be a good person and treat others the same way that I want to be treated. I was taught the importance of giving back to society. You know what? The fact that I have a tattoo is not going to change that. If you look at me and think I am trash or that I am trashy because I have a tattoo, then that is your G-d given right. If you want to miss the opportunity to get to know who I really am because you deem me to be trash, then I fear you may miss getting to know many great people in this world and lifetime. However, that is your choice and how you want to navigate.

I don't like tattoo's, but I don't care if *you* would like to get one. OTOH, I think that anybody who gets one should think long and hard about what it is and where it's going. I don't get those giant ones on people's backs; I don't get the arm circle ones. I really don't like the ones that have names of people or what looks to be entire books written on themselves. Whenever I see Angelina Jolie in a beautiful dress I think how much better she would look without all that crap she's got on her arms. I know plenty of people who totally regret that "cute little symbol" they decided to get when they were in their 20's. It loses meaning and looks pretty bad by the time they're in their 30s or 40s.

I picked out a tattoo when I was 20 and I really, really wanted to get it. I wanted to make sure it wasn't an impulsive thing so I set a time limit on myself and said if I still wanted it I would go ahead and get it. I never did.

I am one of the few people my age (34), that I know, that doesn't have at least one.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that many of the people here with tattoos really are just exhibitionists, using their skin as some kind of walking billboard. Exhibitionism is trashy to me because it leaves little to the imagination. It says: "look at ME and what a boor I am". "I am so impulsive and reckless that I will put some random flower print on my body permanently just because I can".

You can't even admit it is just juvenile rebellion. Really, going through life with a J.D. Salinger or Vonnegut quote twirled around your wrist? Lightning bolts? The ones I can't figure out? You're just too clever for your own good. When it becomes an addiction to shocking people well, I don't think I've missed out getting to "know" people addicted to rebellion. Is my life less enriched because I don't chat up enough "Illustrated People"? I doubt it. If they're discreet, I won't know even be able to see the tat until I do know them, because it won't be in on an intrusive part of their body.

It says a lot about you that you have to strangely insert your religion and family status into this discussion. You reject judaism--but you insert your religion into a discussion where it has no relevance. Why?

I love tattoos. No, I hate how they look. I hate how they desecrate one's body. I hate how they cheapen everything around them (including one's social circle). But I love how it makes it easy for me to learn something about somone. The fact that you have one it telling, on so many levels.

You ask why, and I told you why. If you want the fact that I included my families status and religion to speak volumes, then so be it. I said twice and I did it to prove a point. Plastic surgery is no different, you seem to keep ignoring that. My inclusion was for illustrative purposes only.

My tattoos are for me. They are in places that can be covered up if need be. I did that out of respect for my Grandparents. If you choose to believe that my tattoos are for rebellious reasons, again that is your choice.

You do not know me, so please do not make assumptions. However, it is apparent that is not going to stop you.

Tattoos are as much capricious rebellion as boob jobs are. Both are vanity and self-expression. So what? I mean- everyone SEES the perky new boobs on the front of you, they look tacky, and "cheapen one's social circles" (as a PP so broad-mindedly purported that tattoos do) because it is a clear sign that you are inferior and require artificial assistance to look "good". At least many tattoos can be hidden, but fake fun bags are there to make everyone laugh, every time we see them.
So in the interest of fairness, we should point out the fake tits get wrinkly and old and no one wants to see those either. At least an old tattoo might be a conversation starter, where as old leathery fake tits make me want to throw up in my mouth a little. I'm just hoping that someone comes on here with the "boob jobs are reconstructive after nursing children" argument because I woke up in a bad mood anyhow.

I have 5 of them, and I don't have any regrets about them. It would be pointless to be filled with regret because they're permanent unless I want to shell out a fortune to get them removed. I have them all in locations that I could have them not be visible if I cared. If I'm at the beach, I'm not thinking about my tattoos being visible. I'm just concerning myself with having fun! For the poster who asked about the pain involved, it really depends on where you are getting it and how intricate the design is. Also, your threshold for pain comes into play as well. No judgement on either side of opinion with me. If you like them, that's cool. If you hate them, that's cool.
