FROM WVU’S WEBSITE:

“The WVU System is a family of distinctive campuses united by a single mission. From the groundbreaking research of our flagship in Morgantown (ranked R1, the highest research category institution) to the student-centered focus of WVU Potomac State College in Keyser to the technology-intensive programs at WVU Institute of Technology in Beckley — we are leveraging our talents and resources to create a better future for West Virginia and the world.”

So, yea, you’re an idiot.

Taking foreign language classes in college isn't just about learning to speak the language. The real value for most college students who won't speak the language professionally is that college students are learning about a culture and the world while learning to speak just a little. The college students are having to wslk in another person's shoes by stumbling through the process of communication. They are expanding their understanding of their own place in the world and learning how many other people there are who speak another language. They are learning NOT to be ethnocentric. THAT is why having real language instruction is important if you are going to claim that you are "college educated."

WVU being R1 really devalues that designation.

Your ignorance and bias are showing.

Oh I forgot, it’s still acceptable to denigrate poor white people.

College professors are poor white people now? They have night jobs in the coal mines to make ends meet?

32 majors are under review. They won’t all get cut.

As another post stated, some will be merged, some will remain the same but with less faculty, some will remain the same and be re-evaluated in the future, and some will be cut.

Many other universities have been doing the same for budget reasons and due to less interest in some majors. It is what it is, they need to keep up with the times. I think it’s a good thing, WV is a poor state. Students should not be going into debt majoring in areas that will not make them enough to pay back.

You do if you want to be competitive for a job in a global economy where Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Mandarin etc are differentiators for prospective employers.

Nobody who is hiring for a job that requires foreign languages is going to hire a WVU grad. Unless that WVU grad is a native speaker who by chance went to WVU.

Certainly not anymore that's for sure. Sad.

Anonymous wrote:It is completely nuts to think that a flagship land grant university should replace its entire foreign language department with duolingo. They also are decimating the English department.

These are the bread and butter courses of an undergraduate education.

Gordon Gee is a disgrace who keeps failing into more jobs. The WVU he leaves behind will be slowly collapsing shell rather than an important pillar of the economy.

This is so sad.

Unoriginal and unintelligent response.

+1
So typical for this crowd. No doubt the PP has never set foot anywhere in WVA to begin with.
