Do Your Teenage Boys Still Wear Pajamas?

“So, I need to go shopping for some clothes, and your dad and I have noticed that you boys have outgrown your pjs again. Do you still wear them? I’m happy to keep buying them for you if you want, but it’s also perfectly fine for young men your age to sleep in only underwear or even in the nude, if that’s something you’ve tried and enjoy. No pressure either way. Just let me know by Friday.”

If you think that would in any way be awkward coming from their mother, just have DH say it. Easy peasy. Sometimes all parents and kids need is frank and open communication without embarrassment.

I had a conversation like that recently with my DS (14) and admitted after a little embarrassment that he now sleeps in the nude. Though embarrassed at first i think he was relieved that he doesn't have to pretent to wear pajamas anymore and I am just glad so save the money on pajamas that were not worn anyways.

Shorter version: “Planning to shop. Need PJs?”

That actually isn’t the same conversation. The kid could still get the impression that he has no choice in what he wears to bed, other than to tell Mom when he needs new jammies.

Ok you’re right. I was thinking from my perspective. My teen DSs wouldn’t humor me about PJs and would just say no. But I see your point that others are different.

Kids that age get embarrassed and self-conscious over the silliest things, don’t they? I was the same way. I slept nude in secret for most of my teen years because I thought it was something weird or sexually “naughty” that only I did, only to find out in college that a lot of people did it without shame. Looking back as an adult, I wish my parents had had this type of quick conversation with me when I was that age. My own children are aware my wife and I don’t wear anything to bed and that it’s a perfectly legitimate option for them when and if they ever want to do it.

I usually buy pjs for all our kids each year, but DH seems to think that our son (14 yo) is getting too old and it’s a waste of money, and our son hasn't asked for any new ones this year.

No, my ds wears shorts and a tee. During the school year, he showers at night and puts on what he plans to wear the next day and does his hair. Works for him.

That just seems so uncomfortable to me plus the clothes must get wrinkled and sweaty.

Why does this question only pertain to boys? How about girls?

I think because OP asked pertaining to her son.

My teen has only worn boxers for years. He throws on a sweatshirt if cold.

Same with my son. Just a t-shirt not sweatshirt though.

This plus in general I think wearing less or going to bed naked seems to be more a of a guy thing whereas pajamas are more popular with girls into adulthood. In our house the women/girls all wear some sort of sleepwear and the men/boys all wear nothing. I can’t imagine myself or any of my girlfriends having gone totally nude in bed as teenagers, obviously aside from the occasional summer heat wave.

DS 14 wears a pair of underwear only to sleep in. For years, he’s worn pajamas for lounging but then removes them at bedtime. Just ask your son his preference.

Yes pajamas are properly used more for lounging than for sleeping.

Maybe this has to do with men having a higher body temperature than women.
