The Blind Side scandal

I'm not doubting his case, just trying to understand what happened.

I thought this too.

I'm also wondering if any documents he signed were under duress and therefore void. An interesting twist.

As a pro athlete (albeit retired), did he not ever have a financial advisor managing his accounts whether football related or Blindside related? Wouldn't a financial advisor raise a flag as to where royalties (or whatever payout was agreed upon) from the movie went to?

I wonder if your average pro athlete (non star) has a financial advisor?

What chance?

You think you can see a kid walk down the street and know he will play in the NFL and be the main character in a block buster movie.

Are you daft?

They will be sued and he will get money from his NIL.

But if you think they had a master plan you’re insane.

Are you f-ing kidding me? They tricked him into signing an extremely predatory contract. They are absolute vultures.

I agree they are vultures but they didn’t see a chance, their was no master plan just devious maneuvers as they presented themselves.

In the past no, but in recent years it is required by the NFL to have financial advising… kind of like “required training “.

But even a financial advisor would not know about a conservatorship unless the legal guardians told them about it.

https://people.com/blind-side-sean-tuohy-speaks-out-about-michael-oher-legal-petition-7643431

“Michael trusted the Tuohys and signed where they told him to sign,” the legal filing, obtained by PEOPLE on Monday, claims. “What he signed, however, and unknown to Michael until after February 2023, were not adoption papers, or the equivalent of adoption papers.”

A little more from the People story:

Oher's attorney J. Gerard Stranch IV told ESPN that the Super Bowl champion recently learned that he was the only member of the family not receiving royalty checks, and hired Stranch to begin looking into the situation. That led the attorney to uncover the conservatorship papers earlier this year that showed Oher was allegedly never officially adopted by the Tuohy family.

My post said they saw their chance and took it - they certainly did. They are awful people and basically defrauded this kid. Maybe they thought they "deserved" their cut for taking him in, idk. But you can't say they didn't see an opportunity to make a ton of money and trick someone else into it.

Anonymous wrote:This is the most unshocking thing I've ever read. The "adoption" itself was so bizarrely, narcissistically Texan (I say that as a Texpat) -- "I want to help a poor, downtrodden black kid *so long as he's a sports phenom and my football booster club needs him* and take him into my home to prove I'm a nice white lady!"

. . .

and then to make a movie about it, where you're the literal White Savior, and not realize how crazy stupid you look by doing it in the first place, and getting Hollywood Paid (TM) for it in the second place??

Adoption is complicated enough without the level of tokenism and "look at my extreme commitment to high school football, aren't I a hero" that is going on in this family. So yeah, not surprising at all. Feels like the necessary if predictable coda to that film, in all honesty.

AMEN!

Yes I can say that.

I think as the years wore on they realized their was money to be had and they cut him out of that money.

For anyone who read the book:

One of the (many) disturbing revelations is the way movie mis-portrayed him as intellectually slow. He said it was very hurtful (obviously).

Was that a choice by the movie makers, or did Michael Lewis do that in the book, also?
