Drawback to Div III college?

Colorado School of Mines

That's the only one, really.

In addition to a school like Mines which is specialized or maybe Morehouse, which is well known as an HBCU, most have regional rather than national reputations.

Here's a list of top academic DIIs, but it's out of date. UC San Diego moved to DI recently.

I’m not going to say this school because it would be eviscerated on DCUM but my child attends a D2 school (non-athlete) and is very pleased with it academically. Cost was a major draw. Kid has had internships every summer & has a job lined up after graduation.

OP here. I can't think of any he'd be interested in - he seems to be dialed in to "LAC's" with a strong military bent. Open to names, though!

And yes, PP. He's a strong contender in the D1 world. He just doesn't think he'd fit into the culture of a large university.

I'm a fan of SLACs, but really there are none to come to mind with a "strong military bent".

Hence my quotes. Even the USNA is ranked as a LAC, but no one in real life would consider it anything but a STEM school. I would say USCGA & Norwich both qualify (again, STEM schools, but ranked alongside LACs). It does make research more difficult.

Most SLAC (maybe all) don’t have their own ROTC program. But most do have some what of a satellite agreement with a nearby university to participate in theirs

That's great! Always thought that there's too much obsession and blind adoration of the Ivies on these boards.

He's better than his dad. Not saying more since results are public.

But that doesn’t mean much. He should be faster. That is a far cry from being a realistic candidate for D1.

What I am trying to assess is whether your DH is realistic about actual D1 chances or not for your DS. There are exceptionally good swimmers who can be recruited by D1 but they have to be exceptional.

Stop trying to out OP.

Are you crazy? What are you talking about? OP can’t be outed by asking her if she is being realistic about her DS’s likelihood of recruitment. That is some insane paranoia.

It's pretty obvious she's pressing OP for events, times, records. The swimming community isn't that large. If OP says he's an elite swimming, stop assuming otherwise.

I’m the initial PP and this is absurd. I’ve been on DCUM for many years and seen far more delusional sports parents than realistic ones. I was trying to be polite and not say that but fine, I will be blunt now because you are going into ridiculous paranoia fever dreams about doxxing. I do not care at all about specific times but I do wonder if OP is actually right to even be concerned about this, because based on what she’s said so far, I am a bit skeptical. There have been SO many threads on DCUM that are a delusional D1 fantasy and it is absurd.

If this is a sport with no prospect of "going pro" after college, then really who cares if you play D1 or D3?

This and he should go where he will get the best education so he can have something good to fall back on should be get injured

It's usually a pretty dumb idea to put athletics ahead of academics

OP here. He's an exceptional swimmer and D1 coaches already know his name. I'm not sure why you're so intent on believing otherwise...kids get D1 scholarships every day.

VMI = Virginia Military Institute. Has about 1,700 students.

I am not intent on believing otherwise, but a parent being accurate about their child’s D1 likelihood particularly before senior year is a bit of a rarity on DCUM to be honest.

Kids do get D1 scholarships, but certainly not every day and it is increasingly rare for freshmen.

OP's son wants to go to a service academy.

So doesn't need a scholarship and has GI Bill if no service academy admission. Also has to serve out military obligation if doing a service academy or ROTC. Which makes a D1 school seem even less important.

I would think waiting until senior year for D1 prospects would be way too late. The only kids I know who are D1 athletes pretty much knew where they were going by the summer before senior year, or at least were in discussion with a couple options.

OP said he's 16. He's either a junior or sophomore.

My daughter had athletic offers from UChicago, Williams, Amherst, and Tufts. Perfect fit. She is living out the dream referenced above -- "putting academics first and still competitively playing the sport they love." She also is putting a lot time into two clubs she adores that she wouldn't have been able to do as D1 athlete. Also, study abroad.
