Don’t listen to these penny pinching folks: Swarthmore is way more prestigious than UVA. It is not even close. Hard to believe this is even a serious question….

No. I am from Philly and just no. Your kid will be miserable there.

No it isn't. UVA is no. 25 in the nation and no. 3 of public schools in America. Wall Street Journal named it top public for finance this past week. It's almost impossible to get in and everyone knows that. UVA is the no. 1 public feeder to the Rhodes (other than west point).

Swarthmore is arguable the most prestigious SLAC in the United States.

UVA is another state public flagship.

But sure, they are both the same.

Congrats to the OP's kid...must be quite a student.

I'm not a UVA fan, but Swarthmore is another good SLACs.

I went to Bryn Mawr and took classes at Swat. They all seemed miserable.

Choose one.

If the student doesn't like it, s/he can transfer.

OP topped this to say the kid is going to Swat.

This is the right decision.

Think how smart their kids would be if dc found a swatty spouse Also, Swarthmore is the perfect school for an athlete who is worried about not getting any playing time at an Amherst/Middlebury/Williams/W&L/Tufts/Wesleyan.

Maybe true but VA schools aren't any better at STEM than a SLAC.

I only have the vaguest inkling that swathmore is a small liberal arts school. I didn’t even know it was prestigious

This is really not the case. I live in New England and think of Swarthmore as one of the very most impressive colleges. I think of UVA as the place people wear ties to tailgates. That being said, Swat is truly TINY so that has to be a big consideration in this decision.

This shows how much region has to do with name recognition. Swathmore might be well known in New England, but it doesn’t carry a lot of name recognition elsewhere.

Few care about SLACs or LACs. They are just too small and too limited to make it on anyone's radar.
