Washington Area Class System

And commenting on children's appearance is not?

Maligning entire communities = ignorance = low class

So my husband and I, Prince Georgians who have advanced degrees and have enjoyed much professional success are "low class?" Well, thanks. Since that remark comes from an obvious half-wit, it's a badge I wear with great pride.

For the record, there are plenty of well-educated, gainfully employed families in "PG" County who enjoy living here, thank you very much. I love it because there aren't the throngs of materialistic, nouveau riche airheads running amok. My neighbors are hard-working, intelligent people who aren't so concerned with appearances and the appearance of wealth and class. We live in an EXTREMELY well-run city with a triple A bond rating, excellent municipal services and wonderful amenities. I leave my door unlocked (in spite of all the "low class" unwashed surrounding me) all the time and my kids have the best friends. What more could I want? Maybe snottier neighbors would make my life complete.

Have you checked out the crime rate in P.G.county lately? Do you even listen to the news daily?

It's part and parcel.

WTF is part and parcel? Rather arbitrary, no?

Luckily I speak DCUM. In English this is usually phrased, "Your post wasn't clear. Can you say more?" I said I find all this obsession with determining "class" and "classiness" silly. The next poster asked if commenting on children's appearance is not. I said it's "part and parcel," by which I meant I find fixating on children's appearance silly (to put it generously).

*shrug*

PP, exactly how learning disabled are you? You do realize that the majority of the crimes are contained to pockets of the county, right? It's not as if anarchy rules in PG county and you have to watch your ass constantly or someone is going to pop a cap it in.

6 pages of responses and not one mention of Beauvoir/NCS/STA? You DCUMers are slacking.

Let's face it, virtually all of you/we DCUMers are social climbers and strivers. Some of you/us have only a generation or two separating us from humble roots. You/we have accumulated a nice degree or two, a nice house or two, a beautiful child or two, and a handsome spouse or two. Now, we're obsessed about: 1) making sure everyone else knows we have arrived; 2) making sure our precious DCs do not slip down a notch on that class scale. What better way to do that (we say to ourselves) than getting into one of the Big Three (and hence the countless related threads and frankly rabid popularity of DCUM).

So my contribution to this discussion - the Washington Class system is defined in party by whether you send your child to private school or not (if you live in Bethesda/Chevy Chase/McLean, this makes for some great reverse snobbery snark from the public school set) and if private school, which. Beauvoir/NCS/STA gets high marks for being part of the old-guard WASPish Establishment, and it is for that reason that it is the Holy Grail of the Washington Class System.

Anybody even taking part in this debate has zero class. If you are 'working' to establish class or you are analyzing it---not very classy.

Frankly, the classy prob don't even post on DCUM (judging by the average post).

Low class is making blanket judgments about anyone and anything.

We went to a big party last night at the home of some of our friends in Arlington and there were at least 30 bottles of wine/champagne that people brought. Wouldn't consider any of us "low class" just thoughtful guests...

Bringing wine to a dinner party is insulting to your host's wine cellar...learn something new every day huh?

and if you host does not have a wine cellar?

Then you really shouldn't be associating with THAT person because they are clearly not classy. What, are they farmers? I mean, really, how are your kids going to get into prep school with those kinds of people?

That is the epitomy of showing how little class you have...and the funny thing is what may be happening to your drink or meal back in the kitchen.

Yes, this is really dangerous in the DC Metro region for another reason. Many of those wait staff are actually really well-educated or on their way to being done with school and work at a restaurant to supplement their low-paying scholarships or NGO jobs. Seriously...most of the wait staff in Clarendon seem to be in graduate school. Education? Classy. Being a betch at a restaurant? New money....go to Tyson's.

No use for the D.C. WASPs here. All clearly wannabes.

Classy women use formula and certainly don't breast feed while trying to eat or buy a cupcake!

Classy women certainly do NOT lose their bouquets...

I have no desire to be a WASP. I'm happy in my non-waspy, toe-nails painted only, wine-bringing, long scraggly hair world.
