Washington Area Class System

There has been a lot of throwing around of "low-class" on this board lately. Makes me wonder what people attribute to various classes. Is it purely financially driven, career driven, location driven, family driven or just the way people present themselves to the world? I am curious what different people think...

Personally I think physical appearance has a lot to do with it. People shop at Chico's, drive a Prius. show bra straps, whose children have scraggly hair, wear bikinis, onesies to school, etc are all "low class" in my book.

Check out the definition of SES (socioeconomic status).

It's behavioral.

Anyone who is a "baby mama" or "baby daddy" is by definition low class.

Location, Location, Location!! For example: McLean/Bethesda = Upper Class whereas Woodbridge/PG County = Lower Class

Nice to have you "Get a Life Poster". Perhaps if your life was so great and interesting you would not be reading DCUM.

I posed the question because in the last week I have learned that:
not painting your toe nails BUT painting your fingernails is low class
showing your bra strap is low class
allowing my daughter to wear a bikini is low class
scraggly unkempt hair on a toddler is low class
attorneys with wet hair is low class
bringing wine to a dinner party is low class

I could go on and on....

Wine to a dinner party? Really? Haven't seen that one yet.

Low class is making blanket judgments about anyone and anything.

People that constantly have to tell ppl how classy they are and how un-classy everyone else is: not classy.

People that constantly have to tell everyone how much $ they make or what the things that they own cost: not classy.

People that put down neighborhoods and places that other people live: not classy.

People that look down their noses at anyone that didn't attend "X" or "Big 3": not classy.

People that aren't comfortable in their own skin and have to adorn it with brand labels or sit in a car they can barely afford: not classy.

and so on, and so on....

Doing the right thing, being socially aware, taking personal responsibility, having morals...so much classier than the things one owns, wears, drives- or goes to school/lives, etc.

love this! Some of the ppl with all the trappings are sometimes the ugliest, most classless ppl around--- shouting at "their help", waiters, etc.

Yep, social scientists would define class as based on a combination of income, occupational prestige, and education. But it sounds like you're primarily trying to sort out cultural differences between classes, OP, right?
