I had kids in FCPS when we used to start after Labor Day. I wanted to try starting earlier, and now I wish we'd go back to starting after Labor Day. August is such a good month to get out of D.C. June the weather is still tolerable, but August is really miserable.

Yes, differing opinions, but... the votes for 2 weeks before are way greater than the votes for 1 week before.

I want to go back after Labor Day, but looking at the calendar options, I voted for one that begins 2 weeks prior. The calendar they created starting the week before is just bad overall.

Well, then that's good for us "early-starters." I wonder if the school board made the green one bad on purpose so that no one would get onboard with the 1 week before plan.

I feel like that is the case.
I think the vast majority of people would vote for a 1 week before Labor Day start, where we have a 2 week holiday break, and fewer single days off/fewer PW days for teachers, so we still get out the second week of June. BUt that's not an option

I disagree. Most past FCPS survey results show thr majority in favor of a 2 week before Labor Day start.

I think people favor an early start because everyone recognizes that no learning is happening after the SOLs. People want their kids to be educated if they’re going to be in school.

Does it matter? The SOL tests are just moved up to an earlier date with an earlier start. Push the start date later and the tests would be pushed later.

that's actually not how it works at all. The state gives a window that is usually early May to early June - so tests are given at the same time regardless of when school ends. One year when I was teaching for FCPS we had a full six weeks after SOLs. This meant we had to cram our year into three quarters and then do our best to keep kids engaged post SOL. I actually loved that last six weeks since we got to do some really creative teaching!

Purple, but would also be ok with Orange.
