How many AP classes is considered rigorous?

I don't think there are any APs for 9th graders and only one for 10th (AP World) though I do understand some kids request and get permission to enroll before they are technically eligible. She graduated with a 4.5 something GPA. Didn't apply to any top 20 schools but got into UVA (and is there now).

Congrats to your daughter, but I don't understand how her GPA was so high with only 9 APs. Was she at a 4.5 when she applied to college or did it go up by the end of the year? My son, who has never gotten below an A in HS, has now taken 6 APs through his junior year and his GPA is a 4.2222. APs are the only classes that give him a bump, so maybe other schools do it differently?

It was a 3.975uw/4.452w when she applied. Two A-s (one AP class and one honors class) and the rest As. Five APs by end of junior year and as the other PP noted, fcps gives a bump for honors courses as well. Sounds like your DS is in slightly better position.

NP. FCPS also. It's crazy, but DS has almost identical stats. Through 11th, 6 APs and 1 post AP. Two A- (Algebra taken in 7th and Spanish 4). 3.975/4.496. I don't envy AOs trying to differentiate all these applicants.

As an aside, I think is daunting to look at admissions numbers and see that the average admitted student to UVa or UMCP from Fairfax or Montgomery county has something like a 4.5 weighted GPA, and then work backwards to see how many APs that requires.

OP here. My kid is at Langley. It feels like everyone takes at least 10 AP so that would not be considered rigorous. I hate that my kid is at this pressure cooker school.

The seniors parents I know or the ones who had kids graduate seemed stressed about even getting into UVA with perfect grades. These kids all have 4.5+ GPAs.

OP, I really don't think any school in this area (public or private) is not a pressure cooker for top students. This is really not a question for DCUM. Ask you counselor if your child's transcript will be marked most rigorous. You, as a parent, have a lot of control over how much of a "pressure cooker" your child feels. Help your kid find a couple of schools that they like that they will be admitted to. Don't focus on top 50 schools only. There are thousands of schools that your kid can get into easily. Find a good fit for them.

Can you list these classes? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around what this schedule would have looked like over 4 years.

It has been several years and I am going off my memory so I may have left out 1 or 2 courses but:

APs: AP Comp Sci, AP Cal BC, AP Stat, AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Spanish, AP Physics M/EM, AP Econ Micro, AP Econ Macro, AP US Hist, AP English, AP Spanish Lit, AP US Govt.

Post APs: Linear Algebra, Multi, Diffy (DE), Complex Variables, DNA Science I, DNA Science II, Orgo, Machine Learning (ML) I, ML II, Artificial Intelligence (AI) I, AI II.

This is a school like TJ I imagine. Most HSs do not offer the Post APs listed above.

Seems more like Hogwarts - completely fictional.

But was the student captain of the Quidditch team?

DC has 11 APs and 2 DEs.
I did ask DC's counselor if this qualifies for checking the most rigorous box on common app.
The counselor said yes.

So the kid has to actually check a box saying they did the most rigorous curriculum offered? I assumed it was just inferred from their transcript Gonna feel really good to my kid who is a very middle of the road kid doing "some" AP and honors but not every single one offered.

The kid doesn’t get to determine this. The school does

PP who listed the courses: One correction, it was 'Parallel Computing" I & II as opposed to "Machine Learning" I & II'.

Is that course load considered the most rigorous at the high school the student attended?

Yeah, mine went to a magnet like this, and this looks suspicious. For one, there is no ap English-- it's lang or lit. Also, this selection would pretty much fill up the schedule. They'd still need pe, English 9, 10, arts, foundational science/mag classes....

AP English is listed and I believe the 'post APs' are semester classes not year long classes.

Same. I don’t hate the school at all, but I do regret the choice. It’s really, really hard to be top 5%-10% of the class when the top 20% has a 4.5. And- we moved and kid entered as a sophomore. It requires a transition that most colleges don’t allow for. Accommodations and preference for all kinds of hardship in life, but colleges don’t give an inch for moving across the country into such a pressure cooker. First semester there tanked the college wish list even though grades went back to fantastic and impressive rigor. Good education, nice people, terrible strategy for college admissions.

Well, you decided to live in the Langley district. You could have picked a more mixed school but you chose not to.

Then you’re not from at least FCPS. Almost none of your non-math post AP classes would appear on FCPS transcripts. School district that included those?

You think you are being smart aren't you? Going over what courses are available for TJ etc. Well well. You are not smart as you think you are. "Parallel Computing" class may not be available currently at TJ but it was offered as post ap CS several years ago.

Do better next time.
