My child did this for a couple of years. It's not worth it unless your child already has a chamber group and wants coaching.

NP. Gonna put in another plug for DCYOP. The will find a spot for every child who is willing to audition, show up, and put in the work. It's incredibly racially and socioeconomically diverse. The parents I know there are, in general, super nice and level-headed.

For many kids who really enjoy their instrument, are the best in their elementary or middle-school orchestras and want more, but have no plans to make music their career, it's the perfect fit. And DCYOP encourages kids to be well-rounded and to do sports, other activities, etc. in addition to music.

(I can't speak specifically to the rigor of the highest-level ensembles bc my kid is still in an intermediate one, but they just completed an international tour this summer and sound amazing in concerts.)

Yes, it's nothing like MCYO, which is by far the most selective of the youth orchestras in the area, followed by AYPO.
DCYO is not selective (unless you're terrible), but it's friendly. It's nice that we have a variety of youth orchestras in our region to fill a variety of needs.
