Not in my lifetime at least. |
Why would people be thankful to you for saving a facility that they are not allowed to use? |
You really need to stop thinking your skin color means free passes in life. You "still" have to abide by the rules. Really tiresome arugment. |
By capping membership, the pool favors white incumbents and resists integration, locking in and pulling the past racist and exclusionary policies into the present. Good to know that you enjoy racial segregation, because that’s what you are defending. |
We had a toddler back in 2011ish when people were joining easily. Had a few friends there and went there a few times. We are not pool people (in fact, we never joined a pool) but we thought it was a gross throwback. Like being on the set of the wonder years. That's a draw to some, but it wasn't how we wanted to spend out very little amount of money at the time.
I don't think the pool itself needs to be razed, but given its troubling history they should absolutely address and rectify the damage. Perhaps they need to take 2 community families and cover their fees for every member they take from the waitlist. |
I do wonder if black members of that clue feel the same way as you do. I think not. |
Your post reveals how segregated the pool is that you don’t even know or talk to the few Black families that are current members. |
This! I wonder how many people insisting that the current membership at the pool has nothing to do with discrimination have 1) any familiarity with local history and 2) any familiarity with actual Black people who have familiarity with local history. |
wut? |
What are the demographics of the waitlist? Do minority residents want to join? We live in a neighborhood with a community pool with a waitlist that is several years long(but not that long, yikes) and a lot of neighbors are unaware of how early they need to sign up for the waitlist. What’s the point of getting on the waitlist if your kids will be in high school by the time you get off the list, or if you think you would be moving to a different area by then. I probably wouldn’t waste time/money with a waitlist if I were leasing an apartment nearby. |
I mean, for the 2 adults and 2 kids, the membership fee is $650/year. Given the strong correlation in the DC area of race with income, is that fee something that Black community members can afford?
This isn't some luxury pool, btw. It looks like it barely scrapes by. |
Well it's a chicken and egg thing isn't it. If people like you think Black people can't afford the pool, they won't accept Black people as members. Also, it's not cheap for most families, even those that can afford it. If you were Black, would it be a priority to pay for a pool with such recent racist history? |

Your humble opinion would be wrong. We joined the PG pool in around 2010 (and left, because we moved, around 2014), and there was no wait list. None. We just signed up. The popularity increased after that, and the wait list began. But, I am puzzled about your reasoning. The pool is racist because it has a wait list? Or doesn't limit its membership to people who live nearby? |
Capping pool capacity is a regulatory issue. The government decides a pool capacity. You're putting the blame in the wrong place. |
