Weirdest thing you’ve been served at someone’s house (or at a restaurant)

You're not supposed to eat raw potatoes. They will make you sick.

My neighbor invited me and my kid over for snacks, which was white wine and steak sandwiches. Literally all she served. My kid brought her own water bottle, but the sandwiches had this extra spicy horseradish. And she didn't warn us.

Then proceeded to tell me I needed to mow my lawn and I had too many weeds in my yard. These are native, perrenial pollinator plants. We get out of there fast and a couple sells later I get a letter from the county that a neighbor reported my property as a nuisance property for having grass higher than 6". When the county inspector came out, we had a good laugh over my batty neighbor.

Is this the one with the canned crab and chili sauce over cream cheese, served with ritz crackers to dip? That was my mom’s party piece any time she drew appetizers for the potluck

My mom made this with the teeny salad shrimp instead of crab.

An extended family member decided to recreate an older relative's (who had recently passed away) "famous" dish, a savory pie made with ground meat and braised vegetables. She used a graham cracker crust. When she pulled it out we all kind of looked at each other and then one person carefully asked her if that had been the suggested crust in the recipe. No, she said, but it seems silly to make a crust from scratch when they sell them already made so she just bought one. I didn't take a slice.

My god, this thread has taught me that the canned pear + iceberg lettuce + mayo salad that my mom served was not just some silly shit she made up. It was a regular dinner side dish, not sure if there was cheese involved too. She is from PA. Thank you all for enlightening me.

M dad did also make a chicken soup that involved OJ (he was southern though). Is that a thing people?

She then grabbed a dinner plate, dumped Ritz crackers on it, and squirted ketchup on some and mustard on others. As we chatted (they were lovely!) she absentmindedly fed the dog the crackers. We had a glass of wine, stayed for 45 minutes and then left.

I actually laughed out loud reading this.

Then a few minutes later, the fish was placed in front of him on a plate, with the mid-section grilled and sliced. The head and tail, both still on, were moving as the fish flapped its mouth open and closed.

Funny, that was the one dish my FIL ever cooked for his family when DW and her siblings were young. They rave about it to this day.

np I admittedly have kind of odd taste in food but salmon loaf doesn’t sound bad to me.

I have an Asian parent and a European parent and have eaten many interesting things in my life: haggis, snails, frog's legs, horse meat, various game, braised eel, fish still alive, whale, angel hair with fish eggs, the whole roast piglet served at Viet weddings, pungent Durian ice cream, etc. Long ago, my mother was invited to my father's Asian country, and to honor her Western origins, she was served soft-boiled eggs... and chopsticks to eat them with.

Anyway. I really came on here to add to a poster's tuna pizza comment: that I LOVE canned tuna on pizza!!! In a few European countries, that's perfectly appropriate as a topping.

Interesting, but…live fish? How does that work? How was the durian ice cream?

Unbelievably, my toddler (who hated everything) ate it. Even more unbelievably, the mom who invited us announced she had to go to a meeting and I needed to stay an extra hour bc it was her nanny's day off.

These toppings are considered acceptable in England. So super gross!!

Same in Japan. They put everything on pizza!

One of the families always brought the same pint of grocery store macaroni salad. The other family and I would do things like charcuterie, fruit skewers or veggies and dips (so nothing super elaborate) but the macaroni salad week in and week out was so odd.

Oh—this reminded me of when I was just out of college and had moved to this area. I was invited to a party thrown by slightly older neighbors and brought a pint of bright green grocery store guacamole. I remember putting it on the table with all the normal things other people had brought and a silence falling upon the room as though I’d just set down a severed human head.

LMAO- please share more memories!
