I hear great things about Potomac

Yikes, if actually true.

I wonder how prevalent this practice is at other schools in the DC area or around the country.

Yes academic pressure. Unfortunately the school has experienced too many losses as a result in recent years.

Losses meaning suicides?? Or just students leaving for other schools

Suicides.

Can someone please talk about what led to the suicides??

Didn't say that. I know of an experience happening right now, not involving my DC actually, in which athletes are being overlooked for the an athletic-based activity in favor of non-athletes who are favored by the school and need that extra bump for their top college applications. It's what they do--give most opportunities to top students to really bolster their apps, knowing those in the bottom half don't have a shot anyway. The larger they can make that gap, the better the top students look. It is well-known this is the case.

What is an athletic based activity?

This seems to suggest the application decision is made on other factors. Or already determined.

Essay for lower school??? Thank goodness they don't!

And I love that they don't want to meet the parents - refreshing to have the school want to look for the child, not the parent, who is a good fit. They hear from you in your application.

When do they meet the child? Does Potomac have playdate ma for applicants like the other schools?

So the application has no questions about the child?

And there’s no meeting required with AdCom?

So just a form, fee and optional tour to apply?

above what they expected. I hear the teachers are great, the curriculum is excellent and the facilities are awesome.

I know the price tag is $$$, but are there any downsides from an education perspective? I would consider the school for my two elementary school kids if it’s that great and if they could get in. They go to public school currently and are doing fine.

Well, for starters, we turned down Potomac after the realization set in that they would have to ride that bus every day. Just a pain all the way around, and not worth it for family quality of life.

Hahaha, nice twist!, like an hour long carpool pick up line is a good use of a driver and gas… plus “sitting in a vehicle every day.”

It's not "well known" because it doesn't happen. What is this mysterious "athletic-based activity" that Potomac, an admittedly sporty school, overlooks athletes for? This is all made up because Larla didn't get on honor counsel and its really sad.

I sure hope no one does. It's none of your business!

Something about the culture at the school has led to a suicide. People considering this school for their children should be able to get some insights on what happened.

Why in the world would you assume that any child's suicide was because of the "culture at the school????" Please educate yourself about mental health. Thousands upon thousands of students have graduated from Potomac in its long history. Out of respect for the student and family, let's end this part of the thread.

Nothing to do with the culture of the school. Move on. Preferably to a non-Potomac school, because you’re despicable for using this as a way to rubberneck tragedy.
