Posts like these bother me because they imply there was a time when Republicans were less racist and Trump is an anomaly. Reagan began his campaign near the site of a Freedom Marchers execution and ranted about states rights, George Bush played the Willie Horton card and his son sat idly by while thousands of black people drowned in New Orleans. The difference between these presidents and Trump is that these presidents didn’t have such a cache with working class white people like Trump does, which is the real reason Trumpsters wouldn’t be invited to these hypothetical, snooty Bethesda barbecues. |

There is an unwritten assumption in this thread that the subject is white neighborhoods that OP should look for. I bet you would find the average resident of a SFH off of Randolph Road in Wheaton to be tremendously socially conservative and religious compared to the close-minded UMC white people OP is supposedly referring to. Ditto a lot of residents of Fort Washington, Herndon, Germantown, etc. The reality is is that the most annoying, politically obsessed people in this area are UMC white people and you should probably avoid them if you don’t want to be harangued about politics all day.
This is a uniquely DC area phenomenon. The only place with as many hive-minded, conformist white people is probably Boston. There is plenty of political diversity in pockets of Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. |

State rights are racism? Who knew. |
I think what the pp is implying is that most Republican policies are not really based on any internal consistency but rather in the service of a larger goal: placating racist voters or serving the interests of mega rich donors. If you feel this is incorrect please let us know how. |
Lee Atwater knew. “The late, legendarily brutal campaign consultant Lee Atwater explains how Republicans can win the vote of racists without sounding racist themselves: You start out in 1954 by saying, “N*****, n*****, n*****.” By 1968 you can’t say “n*****”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N*****, n*****.” https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/exclusive-lee-atwaters-infamous-1981-interview-southern-strategy/ |
I read that as “hypocritical” Bethesda barbecues. Rich white liberals swear they are so much better than those racist republicans but always seem to accidentally find themselves in the whitest areas. |
+1000. My most liberal friends send their kids to private school and spend all their free time at the Chevy Chase Club. They don’t see any irony in their choices. |
