It is cheaper than criminalizing homelessness or providing “safe sleeping sites” aka parking lots like we have done. It is a policy choice. Too logical and compassionate to be taken seriously in the US, I fear.

Finland does not compare to the US. Despite the Sami, they are homogeneous.

+1 Finland just doesn’t have the violent crime rates that comes with a diverse population like the US has.

Uh, I don't think it's our "diverse population" that causes our violent crime rates. Lots of very diverse countries have much lower violent crime. I wonder what it could be? What's the one thing the US is obsessed with that most other countries either heavily regulate or ban altogether? Anything?

Which country has more diverse population than the US?

Could you please explain how having a more diverse population causes higher rates of violent crime? Thanks.

I thought diversity was our strength ?

There's been some recent articles about this surveying mental health providers, police and others who deal with homeless a lot. The new meth that's made from synthetic chemicals is very different than meth made even a few years ago, and it seems to be causing people to have mental problems and brain damage drastically faster than the previous type. This mental change is characterized by an extreme lack of socialization and desire to be alone, and large amount of paranoia.

Makes a ton of sense when you see what's happened with the homeless situation. A lot of them are refusing help and services.

Thanks for this. Sad but useful info. It is my understanding that the synthetic marijuana also causes brain damage quickly, it can contain a variety of chemicals and is also extremely cheap.

"San Fransicko reveals that the underlying problem isn’t a lack of housing or money for social programs. The real problem is an ideology that designates some people, by identity or experience, as victims entitled to destructive behaviors. The result is an undermining of the values that make cities, and civilization itself, possible."

Ding ding ding!

I want start seeing them popping up in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, North Arlington and McLean, too.

Let the people who created this problem see it everyday.

Great news! For years there has been a homeless camp in Falls Church/ Fairfax. It is located in the woods off of route 7 and Idylwood, behind St Paul’s church.

There is also a relatively new encampment under the WO&D overpass in Arlington.

There is an encampment next to my office in North Arlington. It's been there since the pandemic. When I work late, I let the women come into the office and wash up and wash their hair in the kitchen sink. We frequently leave pizza or sandwiches for them after work. About ten people everynight -- mostly women

Can we discuss the poop everywhere and state of restrooms like.in Union Station? This during a plague....😩 I doubt very many of these people are "from" DC pushed out by "high rent". Many of the folks living in every bus stop, park, triangle etc are coming here to because DC attracts schizoid and paranoiacs, and apparently is amenable to substance abusers as well Either we receive them with mandatory help/programs or we shift them until they move along . Or both. Pooping on the sidewalk should not be a part of civic life in 2022.

+1,000,000. The union station bathrooms are absolute hell because of homeless people. It’s awful that a business traveler or whoever can’t use the bathrooms because they are so revolting.

This seems like such a liability issue. This is okay with your company’s leadership?

Lol. The train station bathrooms were revolting 30 years ago, 20 years ago, 10 years ago etc. This is hardly a new phenomenon.

Even more of an issue if the PP’s company is a tenet and doesn’t own the building.

Hey a lot of the city improved in that time. The station has been renovated a couple times. Bathroom should be better. It's awful and may be the only aspect of DC that some visitors passing through ever see .

I own the company and the building. The leadership is fine with what we do.
