You are living in the past if you don't think your child needs safeties! Have you been reading about college applications recently? They have soared at all the schools on your kid's list. He may get rejected by all of them!! Not because he's not a strong candidate, but because EVERY KID is a strong candidate for those highly selective colleges. My kid (with similar stats to your DS) ended up at her safety (for financial reasons) and loved it. She's now in a highly selective graduate program, so going to a third-tier college didn't hurt her one bit. A friend of hers who went to one of the colleges on your child's list dropped out after a year. It was too stressful for her, so she ended up at a large state flagship, where she was happy and did well. BTW, a lot more highly qualified kids end up at "safeties" because of cost. There is a cohort of highly qualified kids at almost every college these days. |
