Money and Finances
| DH earns 2m pet year and we still fly economy. |

* per year.
We always consider flying business or first and decide not to. |

I mean, it's a question of what you choose to spend on. I know "regular" people who have taken a private jet for a large family reunion or destination wedding. And I know plenty of people who are multimillionaires and even a billionaire who fly commercial.
I guess having your OWN private jet is another story. |

Depends on where you're going. If you're going to a destination without a nearby commercial airport, or that would involve connections, private can make more sense time-wise. Figure $3k-6k per hour if you charter a 6-seater, and you may have to add in a positioning fee to get the plane/crew back to home base after they drop you off. Also realieze the amenities in a plane that size are limited, like maybe a small cooler and the toilet is one of the seats (seat cushion flips up) so generally only for emergency use.
Flying to Europe and the costs go much higher, as you will need to make refueling stops or charter a bigger jet, and positioning fees will be higher too. |
| I think it depends on how much your time is worth to you. Sitting around an airport is a huge time suck. |

The AWE network (it's on TV if you have FIOS) has a show about people buying jets:

| Rich enough not to have to ask. |
| $100m net worth. |
It is better to be friends with those who fly in private planes than to be the ones paying for the private planes.

How much does it even cost to fly private?
Would love to fly to some places but hate connecting. |
| Depends. Do your research and find “dead flights”. If you have a group, they can be cheaper than flying business. And I am talking about Falcon 80s and G650s. Look around |
It really depends on size/type of plane and contract, but maybe $15,000 per hour all in (hourly fee plus pro rated monthly management fee) for mid-sized jet that seats 8 and can fly non-stop anywhere. Could be less or more depending on the plane you want. We use it for places with difficult connections or so we can bring our dog. Don't bother for trips to places with many non-stop flights (NYC, Boston, SFO, etc.) or Europe - first class in a big commercial jet is more comfortable and much cheaper. There are also companies like Wheels Up that are basically like Uber Pool but for jets. Good for short flights to somewhere a lot of people might want to go. |
| We can afford to fly private. We don't because of how terrible it is for the environment. We have Global Entry and fly business or first class. I'll only fly coach if it's a shuttle flight - like NY to Boston or something. |
| A lot of semi rich people do net jets. |
This is true regarding the environment, however the last time we flew somewhere private - Al Gore's plane was parked right next to ours. |
