Health and Medicine
| Just curious- it seems most pregnant women are getting it. I am on the fence as I am so close to my due date and am worried about the unknown. |
|
I am also on the fence...if my doctor had been insistent, I would have done it. However, his answer was not entirely convincing! |
| I was on the fence about it until I read yesterday's article in the Times about the woman who almost died and did lose the baby. I am generally very leery of medication during pregnancy -- I don't even like taking tylenol -- but this is a risk that I think is worth taking (for me anyway, not making any assumptions for anyone else). I am due in March so will be pregnant virtually the entire flu season; if I was due in November, I would probably make a different choice. |
| Just a reminder that not only should you consider getting it as a pregnant woman but that soon you will also be a new mom/primary caregiver to an infant who can't get vaccinated. |

He specifically states the toxic amounts of mercury (100 X's the normal intake)...we can't even eat certain types of fish for that reason. No thanks! |
| That poor woman! I teared up reading that article. No one thinks they'll be the "1". And thankfully, the vast majority of us won't be...but that poor woman and her family. Hope she manages to recover soon. I'd like to donate to her medical fund...if anyone knows how to do that, please post it. |
| I am pregnant, due in March, and I will not be getting the H1N1 vaccine. I am not comfortable taking any vaccines or any medications during my pregnancy. I will also not take Tamiflu if I start having flu symptoms. I am taking all other reasonable precautions not to catch the flu, but if I do, I am comfortable with the risks. |
| I am due in JUNE! and the Post said today that women in their second and third trimesters are most at risk, so I feel like I have a little bit of time.... |
| I, too, was very on the fence, but what put me over the top was learning from my doctor about how valuable the protection could be to my newborn after birth. I neither wanted to risk my own flu infecting my infant if I fell ill myself, nor did I want my infant to be without some antibodies to protect it. Got both shots this morning. That being said DON'T let anyone bully/intimidate you into either decision. It's a personal choice. |
| I'm getting mine on Friday - not only for myself but to protect my newborn! I'm almost 8 months pregnant. |
|
I know everyone talks this to death, but when did a safety for newborns become personal decisions to eschew? I think it is odd thinking is all. We would never not buckle our children in while in the car. We would never not bring them to a dr if they were really sick, but then when the drs and medical professionals recommend something, suddenly we have morals and medical knowledge regarding vaccines.
I know vaccines are fighting off a long history of causing all kinds of issues, and it is going to take a while for us to come around, but I always feel disappointed listening to people recount their random anecdotes as proof to not do something fairly important for their children's health. |
Well said. |
| I am due in March & don't plan on getting it. Call me a hypocrite though b/c I want everyone else to get it! |
|
Hypocrite, maybe. Too trusting in the general public, absolutely.
Why do you think it unimportant to vaccinate yourself and your unborn child? You want someone else to be responsible enough to keep you from being a statistic. Wow. I have been pregnant and had a flu shot, and I have a perfectly healthy child who got her flumist h1n1 this morning. Good luck to all of you born so long after the invention of the vaccine that you do not know how devastating, and uncurable, viral diseases can be. |
| After reading so many stories about moms with swine flu giving birth to miracle babies, and half of the mothers going into comas or dying (even during the summer or weeks before their due date), I intend to get the H1 N1 this year. |
