| My friends in the burbs tell me that I must have a pack and play, a bassinet, and a crib. Thoughts from small space urban moms? Are all 3 necessities? I have a 2 bdrm, but where am I supposed to put all 3 of these? I already have a bassinet for the first few months and have my eyes on the crib I want. I travel a bit, so I can see the pack and play being useful eventually just for trips. Can’t I just amazon prime one right before my first trip? |
No, you must absolutely do what your friends tell you.
Do what works for you. Half of those people telling you what you must have probably sleep in the same bed as their kids and all of their gear sits in a corner gathering dust and cob webs. And start ignoring what everyone tells you to do now, it'll only get worse from here on out. |
| I lived in 2 bedroom 1000 square feet in DC for first 2 years of DD life. I had a crib, bassinet and pack and play at first. It’s nice to have one thing like that in each room so you don’t have to move them around but completely unnecessary. I was done with bassinets by 2 months and wanted it out of the house. That’s the trick in small spaces. Get it cheap/borrow and then be able to get it out of your space. You def don’t want to be keeping and storing that stuff. I bought pac and plays for each grandma which was convenient for visiting them. |

The Pack and Play has a bassinet attachment for up to 15 lbs. My baby loved sleeping in that in the beginning.
|
| Skipped the bassinet without issue. Used a packnplay in the basement but would have only used it for travel in a smaller place. Start with the crib and then see.. |
| Three kids here and I have never used a pack n play. I did have a bassinet for the first few months in my room and then moved the kids to a crib in a separate room around 6 months. I do not know what I would have used a pack n play for in my own home. Get a bouncy seat for the living room. |
Don’t buy this before your baby is born, though. My first was 10 lbs at birth and 15 lbs by 1 month. We could never really use the bassinet feature (and many other things I bought as well!) |
NP here, and my baby also slept in the bassinet--it's not that little napper thing, it's really just like an elevated floor to the PNP, and the version with the bassinet didn't cost much more than the regular PNP. The little napper thing would have been useless, though. But I can't imagine needed a bassinet and a PNP and a crib in an apartment. The baby slept in the PNP in our room for the first little bit, then in her crib. |
Same. PNP with the elevated platform (which is the height of our queen bed and made night feedings easier) for the first few months, then transitioned to the crib. |
|
We had a ltitle folding nest/bed thing that I used a lot when baby was tiny.
He still liked sleeping in it at 6 months even though he didn't really fit in it--he'd curl up in it because he felt safe. |
Have you ever traveled with your kids? We used the pack and play in our home for the first year or so, as a safe/contained place to put the baby down on our main level (we have three levels). It was not a *need* then, but a nice to have. But we certainly have used it other times, so it's been well worth the money. When spending the entire day at Gma's an hour away and we need to do a nap there? We bring the pack n play. My almost-2 year old slept it for 2 weeks this summer while at the beach on vacation. So for out of the house sleeping it's been perfect and I highly recommend it for that. But yes, you can wait until you need it. I will say, my mom lives about 20 minutes away from me and she bought a pack and play to keep at her house which has been awesome. One less thing to lug around. You can find them second hand for really cheap, so if you have local family where you plan to spend time at their house a lot it's totally worth it to have one there. |
The PNP is a Godsend if you are over at non-babyproofed houses. |
| We live in an 850 sq ft condo. You don't need all three. We went with an IKEA Sniglar crib with a Naturepedic mattress, but rarely used it. DD slept in a Nuna Sena next to our bed or between DH and I in our large bed (opinions vary, but it was the right and easy choice to ensure everyone got sleep while I was breastfeeding). If I had to do it all over again, I would have just stuck with the Nuna Sena (or a comparable PnP). |
| I have two children and I've never used a bassinet or a pack and play. |
| Crib and rock n play. |
