Three kids here and I have never used a pack n play. I did have a bassinet for the first few months in my room and then moved the kids to a crib in a separate room around 6 months. I do not know what I would have used a pack n play for in my own home. Get a bouncy seat for the living room.
Have you ever traveled with your kids? We used the pack and play in our home for the first year or so, as a safe/contained place to put the baby down on our main level (we have three levels). It was not a *need* then, but a nice to have. But we certainly have used it other times, so it's been well worth the money. When spending the entire day at Gma's an hour away and we need to do a nap there? We bring the pack n play. My almost-2 year old slept it for 2 weeks this summer while at the beach on vacation. So for out of the house sleeping it's been perfect and I highly recommend it for that. But yes, you can wait until you need it. I will say, my mom lives about 20 minutes away from me and she bought a pack and play to keep at her house which has been awesome. One less thing to lug around. You can find them second hand for really cheap, so if you have local family where you plan to spend time at their house a lot it's totally worth it to have one there.
The PNP is a Godsend if you are over at non-babyproofed houses.
