reasonably priced assisted living in the area for my father

Anonymous
My father is out of money, just about, and only gets $1800 per month in social security. He needs to be in assisted living facility, probably doesn't qualify for a nursing home. Anyone aware of an assisted living facility in the DC area that is low cost? I'll be paying the balance after the $1800 goes toward monthly fees. I've not found anything under $3000 per month. It is a complicated situation because he is an alcoholic, which is the cause of the financial and health problems. He cannot live with us and emotionally it is hard for us to feel totally committed to supporting him. But I realize we'll have no choice but to pay for this, because he cannot live on his own, so trying to find something that won't hurt our finances but will keep him out of harms way. I've not had any luck, so hoping someone knows of an option I'm not thinking of. Thanks

The DC area is extremely expensive for assisted living. Have you considered Williamsburg? We have friends who found something within their budget there. We have other friends who found reasonable prices near Pittsburgh.

How much assistance does he need? You might want to think about renting a studio apartment and hiring caregivers. Also, look into Meals on Wheels and services provided by your local Agency on Aging.

OP here, thanks for the suggestion. He needs help with his medicine and he generally gets confused easily. He has early stages of dimentia.

He’ll need to qualify under Medicaid. He needs to spend basically all his assets first, and then switch to Medicaid. Some nursing homes will help you apply.

OP here, I don’t think qualifies yet for nursing home care because he can dress himself, for example.

And I am going to try Williamsburg. Was hoping to have him closer because I have two kids and a demanding job but I may just not be able to see him as much.

OP, do you belong to a church, synagogue, or other faith community? Sometimes they can help you find resources that you may not have considered.

The short answer is "no." However, look at Chesterbrook Residences in Falls Church.

That said, if he's an alcoholic, that will be a problem.

You will not, except in low COL states including eg Florida.

Medicaid covers nursing homes, not assisted living.

There are a few sliding fee programs, I don't remember which but really none providing the level of care he may need. At that income the only option is a nursing home via medicaid (special not regular medicaid). Its near impossible to get a bed going in as a medicaid. It took us 9 months to get a bed and most nursing homes refused. You have to find the bed, then apply. So, if you cannot prepay a month, many nursing homes refuse as if you are not approved they have to eat that cost.

The hermitage, but I don’t think they will deal with an alcoholic.

Is he a veteran by any chance?

OP here, no he's not a veteran.
