DD was just looking at the VT application on the Coalition App and they require the student to respond to 4 short answer questions (120 word max). I believe this is a change from years past with just a single essay.
Possibly a way to have less kids apply since it involves additional effort. |
| Applications and stats were up significantly for last year. A lot of students who thought they were going to get in, didn't. Also, housing for this fall is a problem because the class is overenrolled so some rooms are being tripled, etc. https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/virginia-tech/2072881-the-average-stats-for-the-class-of-2022.html |
| DS wrote a few short essays last year for VT - had some choice as to which ones to answer. If one asks something like "Why Virginia Tech?" make sure she answers that one with specifics. Some have noted a correlation between answering that question and being admitted. |
I think, schools really want you to be specific on this type of question because they are concerned about yield – they don’t want to admit someone that doesn’t really know about the school and oribably won’t attend. I don’t think the VT is as concerned about yield, because they have the opposite “problem”. so many that they admitted actually enrolled. My kid is just a rising senior, so I don’t have personal experience. But it seems that almost everyone that we know that applied to VT actually got in. I am skeptical when I read some of the stories on college confidential, because it is anonymous. People say they don’t get in with these off the charts great stats, but we really don’t know. Maybe they had blah letters of recommendation; maybe they didn’t have the rigor that they claim, maybe their essays were not good. Maybe they are just lying. It’s like these things contradictory - Hard to get in versus school were over enrolled. Also, published admittance is about 70%,and I figure since Engineering is harder to get into, regular non-Engr admission may be better than 70%. Also, if they deny someone for school of Engineering the student could still get admitted with 2nd choice major. I may be in for a rude awakening next year, but from my personal experience with students in our FCPS school.; it seems the fear may be unfounded |

I heard of several FCPS kids who didn't get in to VT last year. It was a brutal year. My DCs SAT tutor told us upfront in May, more high stat kids getting rejected. One student we know personally, high stat, leadership, solid extracurricular, not engineering, looked like a shoo-in, was rejected. DC is definitely not counting on admission as a given.

| Wait. I heard there were tons who got in off the waitlist? |
Admissions at my kid's FCPS HS definitely looked different last year. 2016 - 100 out of 176 admitted, 46 enrolled 2017 - 133 out of 203 admitted, 50 enrolled. 2018 - 75 out of 192 admitted, 12 enrolled (Meanwhile, William and Mary took more than half of the kids who applied for 2018). This is VT's first year on the Coalition Application so the number of applicants should definitely go up. Maybe the extra questions will keep those numbers down just a bit. (My rising senior isn't applying so I haven't seen the questions). |

VT Short response questions (120 words or less).
Essay Question 1 Virginia Tech’s motto is "Ut Prosim" which means 'That I May Serve'. We are interested in learning more about your interests and how you have been involved and/or served. Briefly describe a group, organization, or community that you have been involved with. Is this a special area of interest for you, and why? How long have you been involved? What role did you play? What contributions have you made to this group? Were you able influence others and/or influence decisions for the good of the group? Essay Question 2 Describe a situation where you were involved or witness to an act of discrimination. How, or did, you respond? Do you wish you would have responded differently? Did this situation cause any change to happen based on this event and did you have a role in that change? What did you learn from this experience? Essay Question 3 Describe an example of a situation where you have significantly influenced others, took on a leadership role, helped resolve a dispute, or contributed to a group’s goals. What was your role, what responsibilities did you take on? Did you encounter any obstacles, and if so how did you respond, were you able to overcome them? What would you do differently? Essay Question 4 Briefly describe a personal goal you have set for yourself. Why this goal, what is your timeline to achieve this goal, what precipitated this goal? Have you turned to anyone for advice or help, what was their role, what did you learn about yourself, are you still working toward this goal? |
They always triple some rooms. They did it when I was there in the 80s. Then as some of the students washout over the fall, the triples go to being doubles for the rest of the year. |
I know several too. |
No, REALLY overenrolled. https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/2008200-overenrolled-colleges.html |

To answer the original question, last year Tech didn't do either the Common or Coalition App. But, did ask for 3 optional short answer questions/essays. (Out of 8, IIRC)
The acceptance rate dropped from 70% to about 56% in 2018 based on the last mention I saw from the AO. I think most people expect the number of applications to increase again after the move to the Coalition App. There is a fair amount of variability in admissions by major, but Tech is pretty transparent about it and provides this searchable database. (I think it's still just through 2017 though.) https://irweb.ir.vt.edu/webtest/admission_data.aspx |
I heard hundreds. I wonder if they accepted less at first, saw who showed interest with the waitlist, and went from there. When would we be able to see waitlist numbers from them? |
