DS wrote a few short essays last year for VT - had some choice as to which ones to answer. If one asks something like "Why Virginia Tech?" make sure she answers that one with specifics. Some have noted a correlation between answering that question and being admitted.
I think, schools really want you to be specific on this type of question because they are concerned about yield – they don’t want to admit someone that doesn’t really know about the school and oribably won’t attend. I don’t think the VT is as concerned about yield, because they have the opposite “problem”. so many that they admitted actually enrolled. My kid is just a rising senior, so I don’t have personal experience. But it seems that almost everyone that we know that applied to VT actually got in. I am skeptical when I read some of the stories on college confidential, because it is anonymous. People say they don’t get in with these off the charts great stats, but we really don’t know. Maybe they had blah letters of recommendation; maybe they didn’t have the rigor that they claim, maybe their essays were not good. Maybe they are just lying. It’s like these things contradictory - Hard to get in versus school were over enrolled. Also, published admittance is about 70%,and I figure since Engineering is harder to get into, regular non-Engr admission may be better than 70%. Also, if they deny someone for school of Engineering the student could still get admitted with 2nd choice major. I may be in for a rude awakening next year, but from my personal experience with students in our FCPS school.; it seems the fear may be unfounded
