Moving to Vienna/Oakton - welcome recommendations adn advice

Anonymous
We purchased a townhome in southern vienna/oakton (close to Oakton High School) with two young children - rising K and a 2 yr old. We are excited about the move and think this will be a great place to raise our family. I would really welcome any tips on places to go, things to see, listserves to join from folks already in the area. We both work, so looking for weekend or evening activities, maybe a soccer league for the risking K? Welcome any suggestions!

Vienna youth soccer not FPYC. Vienna Moms is a good suggestion. Vienna Virtual Yard Sale is a good FB group for buying and selling stuff like a local Craig’s List but also good place to get Recomendations for auto body shop, plumber, restaurants etc but must have Vienna address and not Oakton. Sounds like you do. Welcome.

The listserve NextDoor is available.

Lots to do on weekends so you would need to narrow down what you like to do. We like to just hang out with neighbors mostly but also go hiking and biking. On evenings with just adults, plenty of good restaurants close by with bars for drinks. We go into DC a couple times a month, either to a museum or to a lounge.

Vienna Youth Soccer. There are also leagues for baseball, basketball, lacrosse, flag football, track, volleyball.

Definitely join Vienna Moms.

Look at the Town of Vienna website for events going on. There are a lot, especially in summer!

My kids are older now so I don’t know if this still goes on but Jammin Java had weekly kid music shows.

Your elementary school might have a rising K play date day before school starts. That’s a good way to meet other parents.

Welcome. Just to clarify, Vienna Moms is a facebook group. To join, your page has to state that you live in Vienna.
Your 2 year old can sign up for play dates, they have playdate groups for various ages.

I have heard that Vienna soccer is good. They have rec center in Oakton with a swimming pool at tons of cheap classes for kids and adults. Google parktakes and it will bring you to the webpage.

I live near Oakton HS with a rising kindergartener who will start at Mosby Woods in the fall. Welcome! I haven't ever gotten involved with the Vienna Moms group. We love Nottoway Park, classes and events through Parktakes, kids shows at Jammin Java, and the spray pad in Old Fairfax City. Most TH communities have their own events (Halloween is great). The best kid friendly breakfast is the Silver Diner in Merrifield, or First Watch off Pickett if you get there early enough to not have to wait.

What do these things have to do with Vienna?

I live in the same place OP does, the townhouses near Vienna Metro and Oakton HS. We are not in TOV, and as it happens I don't go to TOV often (just for Jammin Java, and my dentist). I am sharing information I think relevant to a parent of a same-age kid in my neighborhood.

Thank you PP! This is great info, exactly the type of stuff I was hoping for. We must be right adjacent to you, we are zoned for Marshall Road but a few streets over is Mosby. Very excited and welcome any more tips for living in the area!

PP zoned for Mosby Woods here again. If you are in Moorefield I wonder if you bought our friend's place. Anyway, welcome again. We've been here 9 years and love it. I didn't mean to disparage TOV in my earlier post but we just don't find the dining options as kid friendly as nearby places like Mosaic (many will disagree with me, which is great). For date night no-kid restaurants in TOV we like Cafe Renaissance and Yama. Plaka Grill does excellent gyros, eat in or carry out. Our neighbors like Mod Pizza with kids.

In Mosaic we like Lost Dog Cafe and Choolah Indian BBQ, both very casual. Matchbox will give your kid pizza dough to play with while you wait for your food. Four Sisters is fancier but excellent. We've stayed in the Hyatt there many times and it's good.

Besides Nottoway Park, Meadow Lane Park in Vienna is close and best for smaller kids. Van Dyke Park in Fairfax is good for all ages. We swim at Oak Marr though the water can be cold. If you're new to Fairfax check out the larger parks system, there are many great playgrounds, water parks, and a zillion nature centers. Fairfax City, Reston, and Alexandria also have their own spray grounds, nature centers, and children's programming.

Not everyone likes privately owned Roer Zoofari in Vienna but we are fine with it under new management. When the weather is bad we sometimes drive out to one of the many indoor play places near Dulles.
