| DD will start K in fall 2019. We are districted to a good non-W ES in QO cluster. DD is our only child and we can afford private. However we want her to have the benefit of a neighborhood school, so we are torn. Should we apply to local privates or try our ES out and see how it goes? All this talk of 2.0 problems has really freaked us out. |
If you can afford it go private. But a good private. Not all are the same. |
OP, my advice to you is: do not make any decisions based on what you read on DCUM. Really. It's not an accurate reflection of reality. At BEST, it's a fun-house reflection of reality, or reality-TV "reality". And sometimes it's just completely bananas. Your child will almost certainly be fine at the elementary school you're zoned for, and if she isn't, it won't be because of Curriculum 2.0. |
| It should freak you out. If you don't want your child to be a guinea pig, do your homework and search for a private school. I am a public school teacher (not in MCPS) but in another MD district and I took my child out of public schools. He was a guinea pig for the first few years of Common Core until I had enough. Now he is in a private school working hard for his grades. He got all As in his public school classes and has been tutored in math for the last 2 years because of the gaps. He is finally caught up but I wonder about the kids whose parents think they are doing great when they get As. |
Did I post this?! I’m a teacher too, but in MCPS. Run. Run run run. |
|
Try public and see how it goes.
DD just finished K and I was so nervous this time last year. Our school is a focus school so has a high Farms rate and is only a 6 on the GS website. I was so worried about bulling and other kids just not being nice and it was totally unfounded. DD had an amazing teacher who's 3 kids also attend the school, she has thrived there and got all P's on her report card and is reading at a level 15 ( 6 is the target for end of K) She has enjoyed going every day. We plan on staying in Public unless we see a problem that is not being addressed. |
How would OP's child be a guinea pig? OP is worrying about Curriculum 2.0. Curriculum 2.0 has been around for years. Are you thinking that OP's child would be a guinea pig for the replacement curriculum that MCPS will buy? |
| 2.0 is/was a failed experiment and think how many students are/were guinea pigs under it. Read the report published by Hopkins. I don't trust the system's ability to fix it because of the current debacle with the vendors, etc. Time to abandon ship! |
OP should abandon ship because MCPS is replacing a bad curriculum? How about that. |
Agree here. Start and see how it goes. K is not going to make or break your child's future. Many people are fine at MCPS. |
Hopkins said their were better options out there and MCPS should move on. It did not say no one was learning anything and all MCPS kids had no future. Outside consultants rarely just tell you everything is great. They are not paid for that. Not saying MCPS should not act on it but people on this site are going way too far with the report. |
OP here. I know DCUM exaggerates a lot, but I did read the Hopkins report and it seemed pretty scathing. I guess our concern is that, even though MCPS is replacing the curriculum, depending on whether our school is a pilot school, we could still be looking at several years of 2.0, right? I guess our biggest concern is whether the problems with the curriculum (and technology use) are big enough to sacrifice the social benefits of going to a neighborhood school. Our neighborhood is particularly socially cohesive and it seems like opting out of the public school would really be isolating. I know academics are the most important, but we also worry about our daughter feeling like the odd kid out. |
I don't know OP. If you have plenty of money, then sure, go private. We don't and our child finished K having a learned a ton. We use the money we saved by not going private by supplementing with other learning activities (high quality camps/extracurriculars, tutors etc.) |
Talk to your neighbors then..get info from real people not here. Ask about the K teachers specifically..what types of things their kids did during the year? |
