PLEASE HELP - bright red blood at 13 weeks

Anonymous
I'm really scared. I called the emergency OB/GYN line last night and spoke to my OB and told him that I had bright red blood out of nowhere last night. It was almost like someone turned a faucet on and I thought 'uh oh, am I peeing my pants'? And when I ran to the bathroom I was terrified to see that what was leaking was bright red blood. OB thought it would stop as abruptly as it started (faucet would turn 'off') but all night when I went to the bathroom there was blood and at times it turned the toilet water all red. I'm really scared right now. I literally just saw the baby on ultrasound YESTERDAY and it made it that much more real... I'm still having blood when I wipe today and am cramping (though not badly). Anyone have anything like this with baby being OKAY?

Sorry OP. I don't have any personal story but wanted to send good wishes and hugs.

I hope all is well for you.

Go get checked out, at least then you'll know what's gong on and how the baby is doing. Better than wondering and worrying.

My thoughts are with you.

That sounds scary.

I have two stories.

Mine: I was 11 weeks pg and wiped and there was blood. No cramps nothing, called ob, had an us, no heartbeat, missed miscarriage. Ob gave me some pills and that same night I was bleeding like a faucet like you described.

Good friend of mine: 10 weeks pg, started bleeding a lot, like a faucet too, bright red blood, had u/s and all was well, has now a healthy 2yo boy.

Good luck to you and I hope it is nothing.

If you go t the ER, they will do an ultrasound to check you out....

I had red blood at 5.5 weeks and 7.5 weeks and the baby is still doing well at 8.5 weeks... but go get it checked out today. It doesn't matter what you saw yesterday before you started to bleed. I would be surprised if your Dr didn't recommend for you to come in??

I had that at 11 weeks, and they had me wait it out for the weekend, saying there was nothing they could do if it WAS a m/c -- and that there was a 50/50 chance either way. They just said rest, relax, drink fluids, come in to the office in a few days and they would do an u/s and check my hormone levels. I stopped bleeding after 4-5 days and now am fine (months later). I hope that's the case for you, OP. I'm sorry, because I know how agonizing it is to not know.

No experience with that, though on u/s I did have evidence of bleeding/clots in my uterus. I delivered healthy babies. I sincerely hope you do as well. Sometimes these very scary episodes are only that...very scary, but with good outcomes. I hope yours is one of the good outcomes!

When I was pg with my first and two of my friends were also pg with their first we all had this happen at the same time--literally, I went to the doctor and saw one friend in the waiting room. Long story short, all three of us were bleeding for different reasons and all three of us delieved healty babies.

Just wanted to pass on my sincere hope that all is well. I second the recommendation to head to the ER to get an ultrasound. I think the waiting it out is the hardest part, sometimes just seeng what is going on in the uterus can be a big relief. Or to find out could this be a subchorionic hemorrhage? That is when there is a pool of blood behind the developing placenta and sometimes they can bleed (and yes like a faucet like you described) or they can be silent and not have any bleeding. These tend to happen and everything could be okay. Hugs to you...

This happened to me as well. I bled constantly for the first 7 weeks of my pregnancy (sometimes spotting, sometimes more) and then it stopped. Then at about 11 weeks, had the same experience you described. I went in for an U/S and everything was fine. But there was evidence of essentially a bruise behind the placenta which was apparently causing the bleeding. This can be really scary though, although it can also be really normal.
Don't panic yet--you may not need to go to the OR, can your OB squeeze you in for a quick u/s just to make sure things are ok? Usually they can do that. Plus, it seems like your Dr. isn't too worried so, if you can, try to keep that in mind. They would let you know if you needed to worry. I agree though that it will make you feel better if you can see what's going on.
In the meantime, just try to remember that there's a lot going on down there--moving and growing and pushing around and sometimes bleeding happens. I'm sure everything will be ok! Good thoughts to you!

OP here. Thanks for all the responses. My OB said to come right over this morning when I called a few minutes after they opened... I had an ultrasound and baby looks okay. OB thought it was a subchorionic bleed, so 14:20 was right... ! He didn't seem concerned and said this sort of thing happens. I had to get a Rhogam shot today b/c I'm RH negative so it was a day full of appts but I'm keeping my fingers crossed all is okay. Thanks to all of you who responded. It is reassuring to read that others have bleed and had healthy babies... Pregnancy is scary! I can't even imagine how scary it is once baby is OUTSIDE of the womb!

One of my favorite quotes about motherhood:

“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” -- Elizabeth Stone

On the other hand, OP, I find it overall a less anxious/scary thing now that my first child is here. I can see her, feel her -- now I can even ask her questions. Scary in different ways, but I thought in utero was a bit scarier.

Best of luck to you.

I'm glad everything is ok! I just wanted to add that I had the exact same thing happen at both 4, 7 and 14 weeks (I am at 21 weeks now). I ended up going to an ER at 8 weeks because I was out of town at a wedding on the weekend and really freaked out.

The last time it happened i was sent to a high risk doctor and they did a thorough sonogram. It is a subchorionic bleed. They have no idea what causes it.

I haven't had any bleeding since, but I have to have it monitored by a high risk doctor via sonogram every 3-4 weeks. The only good thing about this is that I get to see the baby more often
