Buying a new Honda Odyssey - Can I bargain at the dealership?

Anonymous
This is my first time buying a new car and I know that sometimes with "hot" models there is no bargaining. Any experience with this? Suggestions?

Yes! I actually like to bargain over the phone or on email with a number of dealerships. Keep going until people say -- take the other guy's offer because I can't do any better.

Email 4 local dealers and ask them for an out the door price on a specific vehicle. Take that quote to them and walk out with car. Easy peasy.

For an odyssey? Not really. I just bought one. Got it from Sonic lowest price out there. Was about 5k off MSRP and you dont have to do all that work.

Honda of tysons. Just compare their online sonic price to everyone else's MSRP. Basically did all thrbwork online and was in and out of the dealership in an hour. Did it at lunch one day.

Yes do this! Also google around and see what kind of invoice price and out the door price information you can find and then confirm if the emailed offers are in the right ballpark. Most car dealers know the game these days and if you show your self to be this type of buyer you can usually get a reasonable deal with minimal hassle.

Also - MSRP is totally irrelevant and do not let some dealer use the "amount below MSRP" to sway your decision...

Just bought a 2019 honda odyssey. We emailed 8 local dealers and asked for the best out the door price. Two dealers came in at about 5,000 under MSRP. There may be more deals available for the 2018s, but for us the 2018s and 2019s were the same price.

For the record, we got an EXL for 34k.

I bargained for a hot model at a Honda dealership. Do your research, come up with a solid, aggressive bottom line price, and when they ask you what it will take to get you to buy the car today, write down your number and tell them you want that as your out the door price. Don’t let them talk about payments, trade in, or fancy upgrades or warranties. If one dealer doesn’t bite, move on to the next. But they most likely will bite because there are tons of Honda dealers within a reasonable drive.

Yes, do this. In fact, I recommend calling. We did no negotiating in person, just told various dealers the other dealers' quotes and took the lowest. Out of the 7 or so within driving distanct, this turned out to be Sport Honda out in Silver Spring.

It's important to get the final total payment including all taxes and fees. In particular, watch out for destination fees, processing fees, tags, and taxes - some dealers quote numbers which include these but a lot try to leave them off. These can also vary between DC, MD, and VA, so you need to include.

The final price variablity was a range of close to $1000. We probably could have gotten close to our final price with a little less effort, but calling all the vendors in the area saved us at least a few hundred off of just negotiating with the first one we talked to based off internet prices.
