Beach Day Trip from DC

Anonymous
Hello all, we are new to DC and live in NW with 2 toddlers (3 and 1.5). Are there any beaches that we could drive to for a day trip? Ocean City/Bethany are too far... We tried Annapolis. Though beautiful, there is no beach. We are hoping to find some sand to let the kids play.

We just did North Beach, MD and had a great time!

We go to sandy point MD. It is on the bay so no surf but there is sand.

Look at Cunningham Falls in western Maryland. Nice lake and beach, not sure what your drive time will be.

Sandy Point is v close to Annapolis. The sand is not the same as regular beach sand but your kids wont care.
Bonus is there are no waves.

It's more like dirt. Closest beach is Rehoboth, but it's almost as far as Bethany.

Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge, VA has a great beach, playground, and outdoor stuff. Plus they sell ice cream in the little marina store. It's one of our favorite places!

It was less than an hour drive from NE DC. It's a cute little beach town with a small boardwalk, restaurants, shops, ice cream, etc. There's an incredible playground one block away from the beach, my daughter happily played there for over an hour.

There's an admission fee to get on the beach, there is a playground on the beach too. Food vendors nearby.

We ate lunch here http://www.plazamexicomaryland.com/contactus it wasn't too pricy, was super kid friendly and very tasty.

Later in the afternoon, we drove down about 20 minutes or so to this indoor pool. http://www.co.cal.md.us/Facilities/Facility/Details/9 They have a fairly large separate kids pool with several small slides that were manageable for my 2 year old.

We heard from other folks in town that Hook & Vine in North Beach has good food. There's also a Ledo Pizza.

Hope this helps!

+1 for North Beach.

Charging for beach access keeps the riff raff out. You don't get the loud music and drunk folks that you would find on the boardwalk at OC. Also, it's really easy to get to without much traffic on the weekends, whereas if you head out to Ocean City, you are traveling with packs of people that make the commute horrible.

The downside is that there isn't much to do in town and it is a lethargic place. But it's perfect for families with infants and young children.

Hope this helps!
