It was less than an hour drive from NE DC. It's a cute little beach town with a small boardwalk, restaurants, shops, ice cream, etc. There's an incredible playground one block away from the beach, my daughter happily played there for over an hour.

There's an admission fee to get on the beach, there is a playground on the beach too. Food vendors nearby.

We ate lunch here http://www.plazamexicomaryland.com/contactus it wasn't too pricy, was super kid friendly and very tasty.

Later in the afternoon, we drove down about 20 minutes or so to this indoor pool. http://www.co.cal.md.us/Facilities/Facility/Details/9 They have a fairly large separate kids pool with several small slides that were manageable for my 2 year old.

We heard from other folks in town that Hook & Vine in North Beach has good food. There's also a Ledo Pizza.

+1 for North Beach.

Charging for beach access keeps the riff raff out.  You don't get the loud music and drunk folks that you would find on the boardwalk at OC.  Also, it's really easy to get to without much traffic on the weekends, whereas if you head out to Ocean City, you are traveling with packs of people that make the commute horrible.

The downside is that there isn't much to do in town and it is a lethargic place.  But it's perfect for families with infants and young children.
