Maryland United

My daughter is thinking of moving to Maryland United and I was interested to hear if anyone has feedback about the club. It's a bit of a drive for us but in high school that's not a big deal because the practices are not as frequent (or on weekends). She said the girls are a lot more welcoming and fun than the ones on many of the immediate DC area clubs and they also have a full time recruiting director on staff, which is a nice bonus. Having played against them in the past, we have always had a favorable impression of the overall club but wanted to see if anyone had experience there.

Totally different demographic than the DC teams. Many of the parents are horrible (loud, rude, aggressive) on the sidelines. A few nice families but most of the HS girls want to be on better clubs and cant make the jump. I would proceed with caution.

Interesting. I agree with the different vibe but I think many parents on DC area teams can be rude and not welcoming to people they haven't known forever. In terms of girls wanting to be on better club teams, which ones? They all seem really happy TBH.

Isn’t Maryland United in the Annapolis area? That’s a long way to drive two times a week for a club that isn’t any better than those in the dc area.

What age is your daughter?

Rockville or similar to Alexandria in rush hour isn’t any better. Trust me.

A Montgomery or Howard county club would make much more sense.

She will be in high school. So there aren’t practices during the week except May-July.

Are you sure? Our club’s high school teams practice 8 weeks in the fall, have winter workouts, amd practice March through July at least twice a week on the weekday evenings.

We are not worried about the commute because we have no other children and both of us have very flexible jobs. Getting to Alexandria from Rockville is terrible too, we have done it for years and don't see it as a better option.

In terms of winter workouts, those are 100% optional and my daughter's school has winter lacrosse and training so she wouldn't need that. There might be weekend practice in March but never during the week - how could they with the busy high school season?

Sounds like you've already gone through the pros and cons.

Just curious why you are bypassing MCElite, Heroes, and M&D for MD United?

MCElite tends to favor SR girls and ones who play for coach of team at their high school. This is based on feedback I've gotten from many parents on the MC Elite team (makes sense) and Rebels is the same for GC girls. Still considering M&D and Heroes, not sold on anything yet, but they really aren't closer. We just found MD United to be a surprisingly friendly team when my daughter practiced with them and feel like that's a big piece of the puzzle given that you spend a lot of time on the road playing together.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I take it your DD isn't good enough to play for Capital?

Ha! She’s definitely good enough but isn’t really excited about chemistry on the teams. We have several friends who warned us about the cut throat feeling on some of the older teams and DD is not sure she wants that so she’s looking at other options. Not everyone is thrilled with their Capital experience.
