We are not worried about the commute because we have no other children and both of us have very flexible jobs. Getting to Alexandria from Rockville is terrible too, we have done it for years and don't see it as a better option.

In terms of winter workouts, those are 100% optional and my daughter's school has winter lacrosse and training so she wouldn't need that. There might be weekend practice in March but never during the week - how could they with the busy high school season?

I know a coup,e of girls on the team. They love it. But not sure you are correct about practices. And as you probably know, there is no such thing as optional practice at this level. You need to attend.

Thanks for the feedback and glad to know you have direct knowledge of girls who love the club. I agree that practice is not optional, but winter training is usually optional. Most girls in this area already have winter training with their high school team including indoor league games on weekends. Either way, we would just work around whatever is required of course.

Is she a 2022 deciding on which high school club tryouts to attend?

At that level, seems like she will need to try out for multiple teams just because it is difficukt to get on a team that has been together for several years..

She already has an offer to join MD United after going to a few practices and playing in a scrimmage with them (we will be on vacation during their tryouts). She was planning to try out for other clubs but might bail because she loved the coach and girls at MD United.

I am assuming your DD is either a 2023 or 2024 since you referenced high school programs. MD United has two teams - East and West. You should clarify which one you and your DD are considering. One is much more competitive than the other.

I've heard others share the same concerns about Capital. The Capital of old is not the Capital of new, so maybe things have changed over the past year in terms of parent and player attitudes. With Pride starting their HS program with the 2023 class the top talent once only available to Capital in the DMV is now evenly split with Pride. Both teams can compete with the top teams in the area and certainly are on par with MD United's most competitive team. If your daughter wants to play on a competitive team there are several options much closer.

If your DD is looking for a more relaxed lacrosse environment I don't think she will find this with the more competitive teams regardless of location. Generally, the A team players from every program are striving to play lacrosse at the college level and many aim for top D1 programs. The experience should and will be intense. Unfortunately, with this comes some bad apples and the endless politics of some parents. This environment isn't for every player and that is okay. The great thing about this sport is there are many options available to meet differing levels of interests, skill sets, and goals.

Observe practices and tournaments. See how the players interact. See how the parents interact. Watch how the coaches interact with players and parents. There are enough options closer by to check the boxes for players and parents, but at the end of the day if MD United is what makes your DD happy and the travel is not a concern go for it. But don't do it thinking the team will be more competitive than some local options and the parent community will be all peaches and cream.

It's a bit of a drive for us but in high school that's not a big deal because the practices are not as frequent (or on weekends). She said the girls are a lot more welcoming and fun than the ones on many of the immediate DC area clubs and they also have a full time recruiting director on staff, which is a nice bonus. Having played against them in the past, we have always had a favorable impression of the overall club but wanted to see if anyone had experience there.

Haven't been through the recruiting process, but believe Pride has a full-time recruiter with a strong background as a former college player and coach at several top 20 programs. I image her experience and contacts will be a tremendous asset to players wanting to play at the college level.

DD played Maryland United at the Top of the Bay tournament in the fall. Chatted with their parents on the sidelines and they seemed like very nice people.

Sounds like MD United may be a good fit for your daughter.

From my experience, depends on the level. I actually think their youth programs (8th grade and below) probably have some of the best coaching around. High school a bit of a disappointment from a player development standpoint and much less of a "family" feel

Know a bunch of girls that go on to play D3 lacrosse that at MU

Curious to know if the original poster chose MDU or Capital?

The post below from January, 2020 has not aged well.

She didn't get offered a spot on Capital. Had her DD been offered a spot she wouldn't have ever posted especially with a 2018 team time frame.
