| just curious, found my old homework at my parents house from 5th grade. |
For me, it was third. I'm still in touch with the teacher who taught me. |
| 4th / 5th |
| I think FCPS does it in 3rd grade AAP and 4th grade regular class |
| It’s first half of fourth grade per common core. |
| the Montessori School my 5.5yo (pre-K) goes to has DS doing division with remainders (i.e. 21/6) already. we were amazed since DW and I don't recall being introduced to division anywhere near that young... it's nuts |
That’s different. Like saying a 5yo is doing algebra because he can solve “what plus 4 equals 20”. Also that’s not long division. |
Correct for my children in FCPS |
wow, I would never send my child to a preschool that has them sit and do math. Yikes. |
| Usually 4th. A lot of kids still need to work on it in 5th, though, especially when they have higher didget numbers & some kids who are more advanced in math during their elementary school years will learn a year or so earlier. Often even smart kids who will have an aptitude for math in the future need the brain development that comes with being around 9 or 10 or so for it to really click, however. |

Fcps doesnt teach long division like we learned it. My kid was doing all this writing in the margins and didn't understand "carrying down" the next digit, etc.
I had no clue what DD was doing and, of course, there's no textbook so I have no clue how they're teaching the kids. So annoyed. |
| 4th |
seriously i had no idea what my son was doing either. i made him watch the khan academy video that explains the correct steps. |
NP. Yes, Montessori schools start teaching math and reading at a young age. Our daycare in DC does the same. If your 5-6 yo isn't being exposed to math, and reading (ex. site-words etc) they are more the exception than the norm in our experience. |
+1 My son learned tons of ways to divide but none of them very well. Now he is in a private middle school and is in math tutoring to teach him how to do it among other things he didn't learn. Ridiculous. |
