Poisonous plants

Anonymous
There seem to be a lot more poison ivy and other types of plants growing in our yard this summer. I learned to spot poison ivy but am still confuse on how to spot poison oak and poison sumac. And of course the hog weed. When I search for them online, all I see are leaves that look like any other leaves out there.
To spot poison ivy, one side of the leaf is jagged and the other is not. Any one how to spot the others? Many of the plants look similar.
Thanks.

Poison Oak and Poison Ivy both grow in leaflets of three. Three leaves. Never more than three. Always three.

"Leaves of three, leave it be".

Doesn't matter if the leaves have smooth edges (Ivy) or notches (oak). It's always three leaves. It can be a vine, a low creeping plant, a bush, or a small tree. Poison ivy/oak grows in all four of these forms depending on the local micro habitat.

Poison sumac is uncommon here. I've never seen it in 30+ years of hiking.

Giant hogweed? It's so distinctive that you can't mistake it for anything else.

I'm glad it's not just our yard where all this poisonous stuff seems to suddenly be thriving (well, not "glad," but at least I feel less crazy). I've already gotten poison ivy twice this year for the first time in 20 years and finally realized there was a patch in our lawn that I was mowing over. It seemed to come out of nowhere since we've lived in our house for years and I never got it before, ugh. I wouldn't wish it on anyone (although the hair dryer trick does help with the itch, I learned).

There are many 3 leaf plants out there. Alot.
Do poison ivy and poison oak just die off by winter?? Do i need to pull them out by the roots?

Poison ivy dies down in winter and comes back in spring. You can pull small plants out by the root if you make sure to wear gloves. I just douse any I find with Round-up.

Is there a service that will come to your house and extirpate poison ivy?

I do everything in my garden myself, but a bout with poison ivy last year left me having to take several days of sick leave. I do not want to risk being anywhere near it.

It doesn't "die off" in the winter. It just loses its leaves like any other deciduous plant. They regrow in the spring just like other perennials. In the winter dormancy period, they are STILL poisonous.

The resin (sap) of the plant is what causes the rash, and anything that breaks the plant open or damages it releases the resin. Even the roots and berries. Also, the resin can be viable for months or even years. The only thing that degrades it is sunlight. So if you get it on your jacket, then put the jacket in a closest for a year, and put it on again, you'll get poison ivy just like it was the same day.

Just spray it with round up or other high strength brush killer herbicide. That will kill it down to the root.
